Wanderers 1-2 Everton LIVE match thread

Match Preview

Wanderers and Everton have not met in the FA Cup since January 1994, when Wanderers famously came back from two down at Goodison Park in a 3rd Round replay, thanks to goals from McGinlay, Stubbs, and Coyle, to win 3-2 after extra time. Frightening that it was 19 years ago.

We have to go back to a semi-final at Maine Road in 1953, which Wanderers won 4-3 at Maine Road, on the way to the final, for the meeting before that.

Wanderers won 3-2 at Everton in the Quarter Finals in 1935.

Everton knocked Wanderers out in Round 3 in both 1907 and 1908.

Which takes us to the first meeting in the cup in 1887, where Wanderers won the initial tie, only to be forced to replay the game for fielding an ineligible player, which was drawn. Then after Everton won the second replay, they were kicked out of the competition for the same offence!

So it's fair to say there has been a colourful FA Cup history between the two famous old clubs, both founder members of the Football League.

Did you know?

Today will be David Moyes's 500th game in charge of Everton, and Kevin Davies's 400th game for Bolton Wanderers, if he plays.

Another five years at this level I reckon

I'll be back to give you shizzz when this is proved incorrect.

I would like to see our in-form players picked for the league. We may still miss out, but at least give it a go!!

I obviously agree and I think many on here are beginning to agree with this view too. Apart from Benny and nuns.

Unfortunately, DF has pretty much already admitted that the team will change for the next game due to people not being match fit ans sharp etc, etc. I think that's a load of b0ll0ks but KD will be back next week, without doubt.

Erm, I haven't seen anyone post anything like this:

"I think we should drop players who are in form, and pick the ones who aren't in form!"

In an ideal world we all want our most in-form players to be picked, but at the same time, fixture congestion, fatigue and injuries are all factors DF has to consider and to which we are not always aparty.

People actually think Freedman is being untruthful about Sordell's conditioning or Lee's persistent leg pains. I just don't get that mentality to be honest. It reminds me of the latter days of Megson or Coyle where there were fans just looking for excuses to complain and find fault.

You are correct - no-one has typed that.

But I have been told the following when I have posted that we should pick our in-form players :

"F your stats"
"Pathetic"
"Utter rubbish"

It's the same thing

I take Lee's leg pain on board, largehat, but I find it utterly amazing that Sordell isn't fit after playing 250+ minutes (guess) in the past 2 weeks.

I also don't think he was unfit enough to not be brought on at 85 minutes last weekend. I've not done any exercise for a month and I could last 5 minutes at professional football.

Benny, I would have Lonergan start, certainly, but I would play the same midfield as today if at all possible. I'd keep Sordell up top on his own.

I think the 5 minutes is neither here nor there to be honest, but if we're talking about why DF says he can't play two games in a week, I'm no sports scientist, but I'm aware there's a difference between fitness and conditioning I believe.

Freedman's rationale seems to have been to pick K Davies who he could get a full game out of for that particular game, and personally, I think it was justified because we got a very good result, although I accept that others disagree, and why they do.

If we hark back though, your comment which was along the lines of "no wonder the lad is unhappy" was written when the subs came on with 5 minutes left, and I thought that was an over-reaction at the time.

That was CC.

Not sure why you think it's an over-reaction. I imagine he was unhappy that he was/is our in form striker and the manager chose 3 strikers above him in that game.

I don't mean unhappy to the extent of wanting to leave, but unhappy that he isn't/wasn't given the opportunity to prove fans, critics, managers and players wrong.
