12-12-18

TOP-FLIGHT clubs today gave their "unanimous backing" to plans for a revamped 12-12-18 Scottish league structure.

Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster revealed consensus had been achieved at a meeting of the 12 clubs at Hampden today.

Scottish Football League clubs will meet to discuss the proposals, which include a merger of the two bodies, on Thursday.

Doncaster said: "We got unanimous backing of the way forward today so it now goes to Thursday and the Scottish Football League clubs will have their views.

"But today, the Scottish Premier League clubs were united in their view that this is the way forward."

The plans were originally backed by SPL clubs last year before Doncaster stepped up talks with his SFL counterparts.

But some doubt had emerged since both leagues agreed in principle to the plans earlier this month in conjunction with the Scottish Football Association, whose professional game board (PGB) has been driving reconstruction attempts.

Some clubs who were not involved in the previous meeting had requested more information amid scepticism from fans but they appear to have been satisfied today.

Doncaster said: "We provided further details that have arisen from meetings over the past weeks.

"The last time that all of our SPL clubs got together was on December 3 so in the intervening time there has been some more detail that's been discussed with the PGB and with the SFL board.

"All of that was provided today and the clubs are clear and united and unanimous in their view that this should be taken forward to the next stage."

I would actually agree. To get all of the SPL members to agree on anything is an achievement.

If the SFL teams agree 'unanimously' I would suggest a massive black hole will appear in space and time....

so its the so called championship for us next season then.

Worst league set up I have ever seen, what planet are they on.

SFL clubs to debate it on Thursday....I reckon it'll go thru....inspite of the fact that in all probability, the majority of Scottish fans don't want it. Same old menu served up....just change the name....

I wonder if CG will have something to say if it is accepted..??

Does this mean you will be in the lowest tier of Scottish fitba next year if it goes through??

SFL teams will accept it as well. They've been promised more cash under a new set up, so they'll accept it.

Kal.....That's not the point.....and frankly it's unimportant. The point is ....we ( i.e. Scottish football fans ) are being taken for mugs.....It's the same old stuff again..... This is not the answer.

RANGERS Chief Executive Charles Green has released the following statement after an announcement by the SPL on league reconstruction today.

He said: “Because of Rangers’ position I can do little more than watch this scramble to reconstruct Scottish football with interest and also bewilderment.

“I have to wait until more detail of today’s meetings at Hampden emerges but I must say I fail to understand why the SPL didn’t move to a vote on their 12-12-18 structure.

"After all, SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster is telling everyone agreement was unanimous. So why the delay?

“Might it have been too big a risk to put the format to a vote today?

“The SFL clubs meet on Thursday and there has to be the concern that if they don’t vote or arrive at any concrete solution then Scottish football could be back in the same situation which caused so much trauma last summer.

"What we don’t need is a repeat of that when one group would meet but do nothing hoping the other lot would make a decision.

“This is far too important an issue for it to be knocked back and forth but I really do wonder if all 12 clubs are happy with today’s outcome.

"I’m not so sure that is the case but hopefully we will get to the end of this in a proper and coherent manner.

“And that should also mean every effort is taken to avoid trampling fair play in the stampede to bring in something new just for the sake of it.

“Clubs have been playing from the start of this season believing they’d be rewarded for success through promotion and that should remain the case.

"But of course I cannot represent my club at any of the meetings or have a say in league reconstruction so all I can do is hope the morally correct decisions will be made.

"All clubs, Rangers included, deserve that much at least
