If he does go I hope it is for a fair price and we can use the money. Personally I don't see the advantage for him (apart from more money in wages) There's a fair chance Wigan may be relegated - they are the bookies' fourth favourite for the drop behind Reading, Aston Villa and QPR. If that happens he will be in a Championship team again. They said they would guarantee him a first team place if he signed for them instead another of the "bigger" Premiership teams - but is he ready for a Premiership relegation battle?
Or do we just want to cash in?
Stones allowed to talk to Wigan

Oh, and the BBC are now reporting that we are trying to sign Rory Delap! Decent signing if that one comes through, not least for his long throws.

A further update, according to Radio Sheffield we've agreed a deal with the Fowls to sign Chris O' Grady for the rest of the season.

Skysports say the deal is done just to negotiate with Stones now. http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11682/8457846/Transfer-news-Wigan-and-Barnsley-agree-a-fee-for-John-Stones
I would of liked him to stay for the rest of the season

as stated on another thread, I have heard that Stones is holding out for Everton.

I understand a £3m deal would be the 2nd highest fee the Reds have ever received for a player, the highest being £4.5m for Ashley Ward.
Whilst it would be nice to keep Stones, I don't think we can afford to turn down that sort of money.

Nice to read sensible and realistic posts on 606. As usual, some of the regular BBS loons have lost all grip.
Good luck to the lad who looks a great prospect, although I note that none of the big 6 seemed to be interested.
To get £3 million for a player after less than 30 games is a good result. Nathaniel Cline after 4 seasons and 123 games at this level went for less.
What a great incentive to our young pros and great advertisement for our academy, disproving all of those who thought it a waste of money. Hopefully, more to come.
Although it's sad to see players go, the money will be a massive help in attempting to retain championship status, which is unlikely to be damaged by the loss of 1 player.
Onwards and upwards, COYR!

Wigan would be better for Stones, but Everton would be better for us for the following reasons:
1) At Wigan, he will be almost guaranteed first-team football for a good footballing team with a quality manager. This means, however, no chance of a loan-back
2) At Everton, he would be a 'development' player, thus limiting first-team chances and allowing them to loan him back to us.

Hibbert is injured and their other right back is prone too. Stones will get playing time at Everton. Even if he doesn't he's going to a footballing university rather than the polytechnic at Wigan. Also 5 year deal at a team that's not staring at relegation every year. No brainer for him , but with them needing cover little chance of that loan back we are after.
Good luck to him.
