That was quite an expensive acquisition for Anzhi, and you can be sure that they're paying him generously. Do any Chelsea or Spurs fans regret not getting Willian, if he could have come for a more reasonable price (i.e. the £21M tag that's often been quoted)? I think that he has been great in Europe, but he probably would have been somewhat redundant at Chelsea, considering the AMs/wingers we have.
Also, it puzzles me that this guy claims that he wants to join one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and have a shot at a national team spot and UCL glory, but proceeds to join Anzhi, where his chances of doing these things will be much lower than they would be in Donetsk (who have, incidentally, a far better team and infrastructure).

All you can say about that deal is well played Shakhtar. They stuck to their guns and eventually found a buyer who possibly exceeded their evaluation for Kalou v2.0.

It appears that the price was equal to the release clause price in Willian's contract, and that Shakhtar were not pleased to let him walk even when that generous sum was paid. Their manager said:
"To tell you frankly, I tried to convince him to stay because I think his decision is hasty and not thought out well enough... Why did he not listen to me? I guess he was under huge pressure from his agent and his relatives that wanted to get everything at once."

I have to ask the obligatory question: isn't there a chance that we could convince a certain Spanish striker that Anzhi would be a great place for him to regain his confidence?

i dint understand player like that who have the ability to become footballing superstars and then decide to move to some insignificant club in the middle of no where and play in a league that nobody cares about. the worst was Hulk money aside he was way better off staying at Porto and then trying to get a move to Madrid, Barca Chelsea, United or City

^ the key to that may rest in the above comment. South Americans particuplarly do this, move to a club with lots of money and no distinctive present day or historical reputation. Subsequently, these are players which these days have multiple agents, meaning they have multiple people heaping pressure on them to move whenever and whereever for their own finanical gain aswell as their clients.
