The Guardian Interview: Jordan Henderson

When he was called up to Roy Hodgson's squad for Euro 2012, effectively as first-choice deputy for Gerrard and Scott Parker, Joey Barton spent a good part of the tournament sending out malicious tweets about the policeman's son from Sunderland. "It's something Joey likes to do," Henderson responds. "He doesn't like to play by the rules, does he?" But he is smiling, as well he might given Barton's history of criticising the long list of midfielders between himself and the England team. "I don't know him and I wouldn't ever let that affect me. Joey likes to express his feelings and that's clearly how he felt at the time. That's his opinion. It doesn't bother me at all."

Apart from the usual unassuming decency you'd expect from Jordan, this also made me smirk, because Jordan looks like he'll become a better player than that Barton louse could even dream of becoming. Barton will have had his snide pop, and Henderson will have laughed and outshone him, just like most people who Barton has had a go at have also done.

Delighted with how Henderson's developing recently. If you look at how he celebrates, it's clear that not many want it more than he does. He's EXACTLY the sort of bloke you look at and think "What a lad, I hope he makes it with us". If he keeps improving like this, he'll be a real favourite here. I'm fully convinced that he will be an important squad player for us, and he also has the tools to become an important first teamer if he can sharpen his skills and add more finesse to his game.

he hasnt made it yet, but he is showing why we bought him.
out of those 3 big signings, he was always the one that would prove to be value for money.
he was £16m and in another 2 years it will look an absolute snip.
he has a great attitude which is why he captains the u21's

erm united are top of the league with a decidedly average central midfield

Lucas

Other than their strike force their team is decidedly average but they are managed by Satan which is why they win things....

I don't know why us liverpool fans have to peddle this dross about Man Utd's team being average or poor.

It doesn't do us any favours when they finish 30 points in front of us every year.

it's ridiculous to be honest. Their defence is very good and they have a load of players waiting in the wings to come in and prove themselves. Their central midfield isn't great but they way they play it doesn't really have to, get it out the the wings and hit the box, with four top quality strikers, they will score goals.

They have quality on the bench too.

Out of perhaps naive support for Kenny, I've always wanted Henderson and Downing to succeed, and they are each getting there. Joey Barton is to be pitied. I strongly suspect he is of below, if not of low intelligence, nor are his footballing skills held in high esteem, reflected best perhaps by the many hundreds of caps he had won playing for England. Not. What comes through from him is jealousy, pure and simple, of a young man who has the talent, but also the character (a rather big word I'm sure you'll agree, far to big for Barton to spell) to carry him onwards and upwards. When Bartons career has ended(has it actually started?) he may by then be wise enough to regret his comments on professional footballers, a group which he doesn't belong to. But then again that would require a sea-change in his mentality. Tricky one, isn't it? jimmyTheRed
