The Management Question

Evening

So as we dont seem any closer to a new manager and following on from one more vacant post we have to compete with its got me thinking about managers. I was interested in looking at the managerial changes this season and where the team is now. Below I list the managers sacked in the regular season, the position at the sacking and their position now:

TeamManagerDate SackedPosition at TimePosition Now
Blackburn RoversSteve Kean28 September 20123rd13th
Bolton WanderersOwen Coyle9 October 201218th20th
BurnleyEddie Howe12 October 201216th7th
Crystal PalaceDougie Freedman23 October 20124th5th
Ipswich TownPaul Jewell24 October 201224th19th
BlackpoolIan Holloway2 November 201212th15th
Nottingham ForrestSean O’Driscoll26 December 20128th11th
Blackburn RoversHenning Berg27 December 201217th13th
BarnsleyKeith Hill29 December 201224th22nd
Wolverhampton WanderersStale Solbakken5 January 201318th21st
BlackpoolMichael Appleton11 January 201314th15th
Bristol CityDerek McInnes12 January 201324th23rd
Huddersfield TownSimon Grayson24 January 201318th17th
Nottingham ForrestAlex McLeish5 February 201311th11th

So Forrest and Blackburn make up a large part of that list and Blackpool have had managers poached rather than sacked but it makes for interesting reading. Apart from Burnley no team have significantly improved their fortunes following the sacking. Ipswich are crawling from the bottom so they have done well but they are not yet out of danger and the Blackburn position is better but only 4 points separate us in 17th from them in 13th so it doesnt really signify a new dawn, especially when you consider they were 3rd when Kean left.

So it begs a few questions:

How much difference does a new manager really make mid season?
Are clubs just settling to their “natural position" as the media likes to call it whenever a clubs sacks a manager and people are ‘outraged’ by the ‘joke of a club’? (Which the snivelling media love to do to knock any club that dares to not want to languish in the lower leagues and whilst the media types enjoy their prawn sarnies in press boxes in Premier League clubs)
What is the cost of all these changes?

I am beginning to think that we might aswell keep Lillis until the end of the season unless someone special becomes available and interested as otherwise I doubt the replacement will make any difference to our fortunes this season.

What do you think?

5 P-45's from me MB.

I've just written a reply....& it's vanished ?
Very early morning here, Typing in the dark NOT recommended.

Stick with Lillis, I said that very early on.
A new bloke will want to clear out dead wood = $
He will also want to bring in his own choices = more $
Clearly, 'Oil' isn't going darn that path again.

Lillis will have to do what he can with what's available, (Just like a 'new' bloke would have to)
He's shown in his 1st two fixtures he was prepared to make changes, & they preformed better too, to some degree.
He will be the best option knowing all about the 'cliques' within the squad, Who the slackers are in training, Which combinations work best together..more importantly, Those that DON'T !!

There's no time left for a 'new' bloke anyway.
We are stuck with what we've got.

The aspect that grates me,
Grayson was sacked, Yet clearly there was no plan, or anyone lined up to take his place ? This is baffling to me from a so called professional club, Because it's not like this situation was out of the ....
The football was shocking.
Had been for some time.
Grayson should have been given the boot long before it happened. But surely.
A new man should have been well & truly sorted out ....

This club under 'Oil' ain't all that,
And anyone who thinks otherwise is Kidding no one but themselves.

I for one, am very disappointed at the way this latest saga in the history of Hudders FC is turning out.

Lillis to the end of the season.
What will be, will be.

Darn, I havent deleted any post, not sure what has happened there.

I think you are right that its getting too late this season for anything meaningful and I reckon Dean will come to regret the timing.

I assumed it was done on the Thursday as he had his man in the wings. Otherwise it makes no sense why it didnt happen the day after. You lose time for the next game, lose time on the next appointment and lose time to get new players in. I suspect Dean has had a moment of doubt, hesitated and then done what he thinks is right, but might be very nervous right now.

Looking back, what's Hoyle gained by sacking Clark because lets face it, without a sheer bucket load of luck at Wembley, Grayson would not have got us through the penalty shoot out. And for what it's worth, Clark picked up 26 points from his last 16 matches in charge, where as Grayson only managed 25 from his first 16 games.

If Clark and his team had stayed put then who is to say that we wouldn't have been in a better position than we currently are?

Anyhow, it looks like it's going to be Graeme Jones or Megson, particularly with fans favourite Adkins showing little interest to date.

the thing that should scare dean is that there is little or no interest in the media about the appointment???

thats about how far our stock has fallen .....

At the same time 38, Blackpool's has as well. I forgot about them needing a manager until Billy Davies turned them down yesterday.

I was thinking yesterday, would we be a be a more attractive proposition if we were battling for automatic promotion from league one?

Probably........... yes, the media would be more interested and a new manager could potentially have a promotion on his cv.

We are now a small fish in a big pond (sorry for using clichés) but we are. No one gives a flying f eck about "Huddersfield Town."

Average at best, championship side, that could seriously go down.
