Right lads, this is what our friends from the 3 Point Lane like to call 'Thursday Night Football'. It's not something we are used to but hopefully it's just a brief rest from CL knockout phase action before we get back in next year.
This is the only the fourth time we have played in the UEFA Cup/Europa League thing. Our first three attempts were awful. In 200/01 we were knocked out 2-1 on aggregate by Swiss side St Gallen, a Panucci goal at Stamford Bridge had given us the lead but we couldn't hold on and lost the second leg 2-0. The game is also notable for being the match in which RDM broke and his leg and was, eventually, forced to retire.
The year after we hammered Levski Sofia 5-0 on aggregate before being beaten 3-1 by Hapoel Tel Aviv in the second round. Finally in 2002/03 we were knocked out by Viking, a Jimmy-Floyd goal and a rare beauty from Enrique De Lucas put us 2-1 up at the Bridge but we somehow managed to lose 4-2 in Norway .
Eidur GUDJOHNSEN is our top all time Goalscorer in the competition with 3, altough both Lampard and JT are just a goal behind him.
Right history lesson over; Pretty much everyone got 3 points for the Wigan game, except Mr Chelsea and, most significantly, CFC 1L1L1C who extended his lead to 11 points at the top by correctly predicting a 4-1 win. No-one predicted that Ramires would score first.
