Its a serious issue in football because John Fashanu came out, people joked about it, and he ended up taking his own life. People need to be considerate and show it is perfectly ok to be homosexual in football, that is the only way the culture will change

but why tell the world ? i'm pretty sure Rogers would have been aware of the possible repercussions which is why he retired in the same breath, so leave it, he's "out"...he's gone...........life goes on.....for everyone

"but why tell the world ? "
That is his own personal choice, but some people might find it unpleasant keeping it hidden all their life. Football has a serious problem with this and needs more people to come out to show that it is perfectly ok, and people won't treat them differently

Can't see what the fuss is about, he's not a Leeds player. He came to us, for whatever reason he was released.
What we need to know he's gay for I have no idea.
We've got more important things to think about, like who will be our next manager.

Leedsforever..........i'm not saying he needs to hide anything, just that he should have told the people who need to know.
I suppose the fact that he's American went a long way towards his decision to come out in a blaze of publicity .

There's an interesting article in the Guardian, reported by Jonty, see this link
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/david-conn-inside-sport-blog/2013/feb/15/leeds-united-new-owners-ken-bates?CMP=twt_gu#start-of-comments
and his thread
The article is by that chap Conn the journalist that attempted to investigate Ken Bates and was widely ridiculed on here by some of us, he's not Kens biggest fan.
The comment is on the comments page attached to the article, by someone calling themselves Mysterious Sgt Wilko
'... It's refreshing to have owners that talk sense. That is a major step forward from the nonsense and drivel that the fans have had to put up with for the last 8 years.
Ken is gone, but his legacy and decisions remain. Those mistakes can't be fixed overnight.
It's a long journey back to the promised land, but at least it's a journey we've now started....'
Let's hope that last line is right. Eh?

Highland, Fashanu was accused of attention seeking as well, which is one of the things that led to his suicide. You are not seeing what the real issue is, unless people are more sensitive and considerate towards people who do come out, then homosexual footballers will continue to be an issue

The Fashanu "coming out" made such an impression on me that i can't even remember the details. Call me insensitive if you like but i don't really care that Robbie Rogers nor do i care Who he Rogers, it's not my business, nor is it the business of anyone on here or elsewhere unless they are directly affected nor do i think it's an issue in football just now, unlike racism which i feel we should jump on from a great height.
