Liverpool thrashed a much-changed Swansea City side 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Anfield in the Premier League.

The Reds dominated the game from start to finish but they were helped by Michael Laudrup's decision to rest a number of his key players, with the likes of Michu, Nathan Dyer and Ashley Williams finding themselves on the bench.

Liverpool demonstrated their attacking intent from the first whistle, but had to wait 34 minutes before the first goal arrived. They should have been awarded a penalty earlier on in the game when Daniel Sturridge was brought down in the box, but when Kemy Agustien brought down Luis Suarez with 33 minutes gone, the penalty was awarded.

Steven Gerrard stepped up and slotted it into the bottom left corner. And just seconds into the second half it was 2-0, as Philippe Coutinho, making his first start for the club, burst through on goal and hit his shot through Michel Vorm into the net.

Four minutes later it was three with Jose Enrique finishing off a superb team goal. Coutinho back heeled it to Suarez, who moved it on to Sturridge, who dragged it back and played it across for Enrique to poke into the roof of the net.

And another six minutes after this, a ruthless Liverpool began to embarrass the Swans with a fourth. Suarez received the ball from Stewart Downing and charged forward unchallenged, before cutting inside and curling it into the far corner.

On 71 minutes the rout was complete, again from the penalty spot. Substitute Wayne Routledge bizarrely decided to stick his arm out in the area and handle the ball to prevent it from reaching Suarez. This time it was Sturridge who stepped up, and he placed it into the back of the net.

The only downside to the game was substitute Fabio Borini's clear agony after dislocating a shoulder, and he had to leave the field again just minutes after coming on.

With no other league game being played at the weekend, Liverpool reduced the gap to fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur to nine points and move up to seventh in the table.
