Morning everybody! An article about the young lion on our books. Danny looks like he's improving every time I watch him play. Last year he had a very positive loan spell at Sunderland, and there were flashes of brilliant such as his demolition of Chelsea at Stanford Bridge. He's a player who tends to stand out and do things that thrill and surprise. Examples of this range from his 30 yard debut missile to last nights game va Barca where he received the ball from his right hand side, did what I would call a forwards Cruyff turn, and skinned both CBs in a touch. His downfall though is what happened next.
He scores goals when he's played up front, but that I think is because of how rounded his game is he creates many chances for himself. He's not yet clinical though. Maybe it's composure he lacks, or experience of putting the ball past top keepers, because he's a very good finisher. Hopefully he'll stay late after training an hour a day and work on putting the ball in the corner of the next with some power. Genuinely he's got enough about him to be better than Cole or Yorke, who he's regularly compared to.
Great prospect and I hope that he gets himself a good 20-25 games this season and bags himself 10 goals in all competitions. Waiting for these good young players to become great in training isn't enough. Get him as 4th choice behind Chica, Berbalove and Rooney.

Very nice to read a balanced view and some moderate expectations for a promising young lad, instead of the typical world-class-player-after-3-good-performances approach.
Your 'he's the next xyz' comparisons (Cole, Yorke) are ambitious, yet a reasonable ask if you're looking for players a club with United's stature.
As I just posted elsewhere:
"You've gotta remember too than only a small % of talented younsgters actually turn out to be the fine players their early promise suggests. It's not just the tactical and physical side of the game they need to adapt to - for many, it's simply too much of a mental ask to be at the top of their capabilities week in, week out.
All it takes is one or two particularly hard-to-take defeats and their confidence may never be the same again. Mental resilience is probably one of the key attributes of virtually all top-drawer footballers."
Unless their talent is freakishly good (Messi), and even so (countless players who've fallen by the wayside), the best approach to developing lads like Welbeck is the one you pointed out - one step at a time.

Wellbeck is talented enough to play for Manchester United and his performances are growing all the time. I think he could be a useful squad player this season and maybe even more than that in seasons to come.
Certainly one to keep an eye on.

All our young lads played well last night, Cleverley in particular. I'd play Jones, Cleverley and Wellbeck from the start next week at Wembley against Cheadle.

He seems to be better when he plays in the hole than when he is further up the pitch. He has is good on the ball, great movement, smart and links up well with the players around him.
