Keepmoat pitch!

So Gary Johnson is the latest to comment on the state of the pitch at the Keepmoat. This is nothing new as SoD used to claim it contibuted to the injury list. Yes, there are divots all over the surface but its what's underneath that worries me. It seems far too firm for a football pitch and I feel for the groundstaff like Andy Thompson who has had some very unfair criticism levelled at him recently. There is nothing you can do with this pitch to make it more playable other than water it but then it cuts up even more. I'm not an expert but can't we rip it up start again?

What would happen is what happened many times during my time at Elland Road and other grounds. The Rugby team plays all games away for a period and then catches up after the new pitch is established. It means they go without income for a bit but so be it.

I have just had the chance to watch the exnded highlights and yes, that pitch is a disgrace. However, it has not got like that through a couple of Rugby League games. There is definitely something wrong with the way it was originally laid by the Council.

I agree that it should be dug up and completely relaid for next season. I would agree with the comments about the c overs and the very bad weather that you have had for a long time.

Nothing can be done now, they will just have to get on with it, it's goin g to be the same for both sides each home game.

The only way to play on this pitch is to be positive when receiving the pass, take it on the move and as early as possible.

No point moaning about it the players have got to make the best of a bad job.

As a non pitch laying expert i think i may be right in saying that the amount of time needed to replace a pitch is very small indeed.
I went on a stadium tour at real madrids ground three or four years ago and they told me that they replace the pitch two or three times a season, the problems being caused by the lack of sunlight actually getting onto the pitch itself.
Now i realise that it is a lot warmer in Madrid than in Donny and that the grass will bed in and grow quicker but if our pitch was changed in the summer it shouldnt be a problem, should it?
The cost of the undersoil heating is probably prohibitive but we do have Polypipe as a main club sponsor and they do underfloor heating for buildings so perhaps they could be asked for advice in this area.
Running costs wouldnt be massive as it would probably only be needed for three or four games a season.

Didn't we rip up the original pitch a couple of summers ago and relay it?
May be what you're talking about is more than they did, but clearly what they did last time hasn't worked that well. Although having had a very wet year, it certainly hasn't been ideal growing weather.

As my dad used to say...It is the same for both teams on the day... It is a poor workman that blames his tools...I visited a man who lost his wife today and he and she used to say "It is of no consequence what happens" Another ditty for me...Just get on with it and stop looking for excuses...No doubt the pitch is the recent loss of form excuse eh? Be Positive.

Did anyone see the League One highlights on Sky Sports? If you did, did you check out the pitches at Tranmere and Colchester, not a single Rugby player on either pitch. Niether of them any better than the Keepmoat.

Although the surface is pretty rough, it is too firm and doesn't have the 'give' of a proper turfed surface. As Roverian stated, we spend too much time playing head tennis because the ball is bouncing so high. It reminds me of those ridiculous plastic pitches that are now outlawed in league football but without the advantage of it being level.

Exactly roversmarc, it is not what is played on it, but the actual make up of the pitch. As has been stated the covers didn't help the surface but they did enable us to win a couple of games, so, in the end the end justifies the means. Let's hope we spend a bit at the end of the season to put it right.
