So, the first hundred goes to Mr Bell - given that automatic choices in the batting line-up amount to Cook, Pieterson, Root and Trott and of course Bell then that leaves Compton. In my view we need someone to rip into bowling at the top of the order, and Compton won't do that - so for me Root should open in this test series and we should look to him for the Ashes. Thoughts anyone?

Whilst i think Root is heir to the openers spot and i think a better player than Compton, i don't see Flower dropping Compton for Root to open. Compton did nothing wrong in India and at times did a pretty good job and didn't let anyone down, England now days don't drop players who've done that in the previous series ( or to date anyway). Also Compton opened in the only warm up game we play i believe so to me he's nailed on for the first test with Root at 6 i'd imagine.

Root may take over the openers role in the not too distant future, but Compton deserves a further go after India.

No one needs to rip into the bowling from the off.. If we get off to a steadyish start. That will tire out the bowlers. Compton was a little slow in India. He will be judged on the NZ tour.. If he doesnt cut it. He will be gone.

he doesn't cut it. For me at least. We are getting off to too many shaky starts - time for Root to take over and bring in Bairstow for Compton

Kp's best position is number 5 and bell's is number 3.
So to me that would work out nicely.
I'd open with Trott and bring Root upto 4th..
Root can ease his way in.. 6th is to far down the order. Nestle Kp inbetween Root and Bairstow at 6. He can help the new boys establish themselfs in the team.
