In the end, Dhoni saw sense and was persuaded to withdraw the appeal.
It took a delegation of Strauss and Flower to achieve this.
Why didn't he withdraw the appeal when the umpires asked him on the pitch?
Did you see some of the Indian players laughing and smiling as they left the pitch at tea having 'cheated' Bell of his wicket?

Kash,
True, technically and legally speaking bell was out.... however, in the context of that situation in particular and with the fact that it was a ball before tea, i think what Dhoni did was correct........ Would bell have walked off like that if it wasnt tea-time?? I very much doubt it.....
The indian press are not happy and are saying exactly what your saying, should have told england to stuff it..... but i think dhonis actions defused the situation...... But did he do it for the "right" reason..... very questionable in my opinion!!!

Thats true Afridi. These tests have been so one sided and Dhoni's own performance as a skipper, keeper and batsman left a lot to be desired so to paper over his cracks he bowed to pressure from Strauss and Flower. There was no way they were discussing it at tea and like you said they were happy that they got Bell out.

the indians said they were discussing it at tea - more like having a laugh about it.
does your moral compass only arrive when you have a cup of tea in your hand and can reflect upon what happened?
could dhoni see some product endorsement coming from this incident?
india have so many 'senior' players (harbhajan, Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman) yet their voices couldn't be heard for the silence.
