Is Welbeck the new Park?

Never thought this could ever be a comparison but it came to me last night when watching the game.

Danny used to be a striker but is getting played more and more out wide. His main strengths seem to be his link up play, intelligent runs and work rate. He was tracking Alonso last night similar to how Park tracked Pirlo vs Milan a few years ago.

Its strange. I thought Danny was going to be a fantastic striker. But i see him moving more and more in to this role. He also seems to play and thrive in the big games as Park used to for us.

His finishing just isn't there, and with Van Persie, Rooney and Hernandez, he will struggle to get a look in up front.

This leads me to think that Danny Welbeck DOES have a big future for Man Utd, and England. But he will end up as a winger with great pace and work rate but still with an eye for goal hopefully.

I think we need players like this. I used to be really annoyed when i saw Welbeck wide ahead of Young or Valencia, but on recent form, it looks like he may do well!

He will become great. Not as a winger though, so i disagree with the OP. When RVP is 35, Welbeck will be 26, and hitting his prime. We will see then.

Well actually welbeck will be 28.

i reckon welbeck will not be at united much longer

He can improve upfront but do you think he will get the chance to? Even if Rooney leaves or something i cant see him getting a regular spot upfront. He will have to have incredible patience

There's no comparison at all. Park was able to finish of his chances!

I had a guess with his age, still in his prime.

Some fans seriously underrate Welbeck's other qualities, like holding the ball up, encouraging one touch football. Even fans of Munich, Barca were praising him.

You have to be patient, where was Drogba at 22?

Thought he was your best player the other night and in the Bernabeu

The chance he had in the first half was a great save rather than a bad miss to be fair to the kid

People use this example an example that players can mature into great ones. Fact is most great players are great in their early twenties and get better.

Not all players are great in their early 20s. Drogba is a case in point.

The thing is, he has shown potential and the only thing people seem to complain about is his finishing. He is better when he doesn't have time to think, as when he does he complicates things for himself.

He will get better. I have faith in him.

I think he could be able to play in that position but not under SAF.

If you look at the German side and especially Podolski, there is a clear argument that this could work.

However under Fergie, the majority of the time we play rigid 442 formation which heavily relys on width and the wide players getting past full backs and putting balls into the box.

Unfortunately Danny always cuts inside when playing in that position. Don't get me wrong, he is useful there in big games, where the team we are up against isn't parking the bus, but on 90% of occasions where WE need to break the team down, he can be very ineffective there.
