FT: VALERENGA 3-3 LIVERPOOL

DATE: Monday 1 August 2011
KICK OFF: 18:00
VENUE: Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo
COMPETITION: Friendly
REFEREE: Unknown
BROADCAST: ESPN, 18:00

Liverpool conceded a last minute goal on Monday night against Valerenga to deny them a victory in their penultimate pre-season game.

Liverpool had a much stronger side out than in their previous games, and looked lively early on. However, the game began to change when the Norwegian side took the lead. After a good piece of play, Lars Iver Strand produced a good finish to roll the ball into the corner past Pepe Reina.

Five minutes later, their lead was doubled in controversial circumstances. The referee awarded a penalty as Fegor Ogude caught Charlie Adam's leg and fell to the ground. Ogude stepped up and made no mistake.

Towards the end of the half, Liverpool started to come back into it and pulled a goal back two minutes before the break, again through controversial circumstances. Stewart Downing sent in a cross and it landed on Andy Carroll's arm, before he smashed it into the net.

The Reds upped the tempo in the second half, but left it late before grabbing the equaliser. Daniel Agger was the scorer with a header in the 83rd minute, and five minutes later he bundled the ball in to give Liverpool what looked to be a winning goal.

But Valerenga had other ideas. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Mohammed Fellah grabbed the equaliser through a deflected effort which beat Pepe Reina.

Liverpool had other chances throughout the match, but through a mix of inaccurate shooting and a great goalkeeping performance, they could not add to their tally.

The Reds now have just one pre-season match left, against Valencia at Anfield on Saturday.

Roseberg are arguably the best team in Norway...

Rosenborg? In the CL and most successful Norwegian team.

Valarenga? Plumbers and builders

Scraping the barrel here I'm afraid if you're arguing about the quality between Norwegian teams.

We may not win more than 15 games? We managed that last season and we're better than last season.

Yes, but most of those were in typical end of season games once you knew you were safe from relegation and the pressure was off, and you were playing other mid table teams who also had nothing to play for. What's funny though is that those 'victories' have suddenly made delusional folk like you forget just how shambolic this current Liverpool side is, and you're in for a major dose of reality in the coming months.

time will tell whether LIverpool are as bad as their preseason. You can't tell how the league will shape up until the end of September.
I do however think that if Liverpool had waited until the summer they would have got lot more value for their 35m, I think they would have got Carrol much cheaper and probably enough left over to get Mata or a top defender. When you think about the contribution Carrol made to the second half of the season it was a mistake imo.
