...saying that we should go for Diego Capel in the summer because he's cheap, and a left winger.
And people AGREED with this, thinking it was a good idea.
Is that really how simple some of you think it is? "Oh, we don't have a left footed winger, lets go buy one and it'll improve us!"
Well, it doesn't work like that, it wouldn't improve us, and anyone who can't understand why it wouldn't should have a good long think and try to grasp the game to a higher degree.
How exactly would a left footed left winger improve our league standing? How exactly would one have helped us against Madrid? Do we not score goals from the left hand side?
You buy a player because they could be a great player AND offer you something different to what you've got, you don't just buy random no-marks because they play in a certain position and KICK THE BALL WITH THEIR LEFT FOOT!
Are the fans who agreed with this idiotic suggestion even in to football?
I've tried explaining it recently but I think every time I try, it goes over a lot of people's heads, so just take my word for it now that next season and after, while Sir Alex is still here, we're going to see a Manchester United with forwards drifting wide and van Persie in particular playing as a striker for a while, then drifting out to a wing-forward position for chunks of games. We're going to see Rooney as a 9 and a 10 separately during different periods of the game and we're going to see Antonio Valencia become a from-the-bench player, with Welbeck and Zaha playing as winger/strikers, eventually with Welbeck displacing v.Persie and assuming an "Henry-role". We'll need a top drawer player to operate from the right to be creative and also offer a serious individual goal threat to complete our attack and that's where big money will be spent this summer. Nani could be able to play the role, but I think he's gone tbh, inspite of all the hope that he'll stay. Fact is though he's on big money, wants more, and isn't as good as he needs to be to be sure of a starting role + the wages he's after at our club. Once in a while when he's on form, yeah, he's as good as anyone in the world. But he's not going to deliver consistently at the highest level ever, so I foresee a big player replacing Nani in the summer. If they don't, then it's because they weren't available, no other reason.
As for the left side, the player I think'll replace Nani is James Rodriguez, who plays anywhere in front of midfield, and is going to be a superstar. Also happens to be left footed. Not that that matters much, but it should keep people happy.
So yesterday there was a thread...

Seeing as we're talking about Brazil, surely Rafael deserves a few caps ahead of Alves? Poor lad, he's been great this year

Hopefully Rafa will start getting in the squad.

Brazil haven't played beautiful team football since the 80s.
Since then they've had more great individuals than any other country and therefore have obviously had moments of entertainment on the field. But they've basically played quite a conservative brand of football since the relative failure of the phenomenal 1982 team. They ditched samba spontaneity and creativity in midfield in favour of two defensive-minded CMs. Counter-attacking wing backs and great attacking players. But when was the last time we saw a great, creative Brazilian central midfielder? They have specialised in players who float around behind the striker and the wings (Kaka, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo) but behind them there is almost always a two-man barrier of Dunga / Kleberson / Gilberto / Lucas types (good at their jobs, excellent in some cases, but its' still quite negative to play two destroyer-recyclers.

The fact of it is this is a forum where WUM articles get 100+ comments, and proper football topics, unless they're R.I.P articles or some such, will get 5 or 6

36 year professional career?!
So if he started at pro football at 16 he was didn't stop playing until he reached 52?!
Or is it at 36 he ended his professional career?

Good points, Red.
However, I disagree that counter attacking football cannot be great team football. And at times they were all out attack with some very nice stuff being played.
Perhaps they weren't as good as those 80's sides, but I still found them very entertaining to watch.
