Lets say for arguments sake that this is a genuine possibility and that he is available for £8.5m as reported. Would all Liverpool fans take him?? You might think this is a stupid question but i want to add some caution to this. First of all there's the old saying, 'you should never go back.' Secondly, his wages would break our system of low pay, high reward. Thirdly, he's 31. Do we really want two midfielders both coming to the end of there careers and £100,000 a week plus? We'll have to fork out a lot of money in a few years time to replace Alonso and Gerrard if they remain regular starters. Finally, is Alonso the type of player we need? He's essentially just a better version of Lucas isn't he? I think we need a bit more of a ball winner as an alternative to Lucas in the Mascherano mold.
Don't get me wrong here. Alonso remains one of my favorite players, i would love to see him play at Anfield again just so the fans can give him the reception that he truly does deserve. I will never forget his equalizing penalty in Istanbul. However, i'm really not convinced that this is the answer to our problems. I agree Alonso would make us a better team but i think we could give £100,000 a week to a player that will make even more of a difference to our team. Sahin was a great player but he didn't fit in and he's a similar player to Alonso.
As much as it pains me to say this, I just don't think that Xabi is the right man for us at this time. We need to spend big in other areas of the pitch on players who still have their best years ahead of them. Therefore, I personally am not praying for the Alonso transfer to happen. Does anybody else agree or is everyone just blinded by their love?
For those people, would you sign Alonso now if he had't played for Liverpool?
Xabi Alonso

Tags - he had 2 superb seasons out of 5, plus a couple of decent ones. Unless age is affecting me I only remember 1 season when he wasn't really up to scratch.

It's not that I wouldn't want him back, just questioning if it's worth close to 10 million and huge wages. Surely he could play a role, though first we will need a top CB, DM cover for Lucas, and Winger or attacking player.

Feck the wages we have the money, I like the idea of a young player coming in and his wage increasing with performance but Alonso would walk straight into any midfield in the pl and his calibre of player is exactly what we need to improve our team.
Can't believe not taking him is even being considered he's a truly world class player I don't throw that term around lightly

Liverpool would do well to get a player of Alonso's calibre, I just don't think it would happen!
No CL football is a huge hurdle for a club like Liverpool to attract the very best talent, and Alonso is one of those...his 'love' for the club might make it happen, but I doubt it. Unless the club was to seriously provide him with the idea that they were genuine challengers then the idea of Alonso to Liverpool is just a dream!

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to sign him back again, for all the reasons stated above. Not only those, but if you want to make our youngsters better, then they'll benefit hugely from just playing against him in training and the tips and knowledge that he will pass on to them. So he'd be worth every single penny of his wages.

Brendan has iterated the need for experience to guide the younger players. For me there is nobody better in world football than Alonso to help the likes of Henderson and Shelvey improve their game.
