Terraria - PC to PS3

I played Terraria solidly for a couple of weeks upon the PC release a year or two ago. I thought it was a great game and I certainly preffered it to Minecraft.

I did have a few gripes with that version, namely the controls. Obviously, working in the inventory was definitely suited to using a mouse, but, I found using the keyboard and mouse to control my character incredibly annoying. Perhaps the issue lay in playing with a laptop for long periods of time, the option was to either sit at a table which was uncomfortable or on the sofa which was impractical.

Anyway, I can't help thinking the PSN/360 version will both suffer and excel with the use of a controller. I'm thinking things will be the opposite, controlling the character would be much more intuitive and managing the inventory could become tiresome.

Has anybody played the console version of the game? If so, how did you find the controls?

Also, are there any new features/improvements made to the console port? And, how good is the co op element of the game? (something I didn't try on the PC version)
