Imo, his most valuable trait happens to be his most subtle one. His risk assessment engine in relation to himself is spot on. When you think about it the only job where he truly exceeded expectation was at Leiria - everywhere else he merely seized upon welcome opportunities.
You could discredit his achievements with Porto as casually as you hypothetically could AVB's - the CL win was the very definition of opportunistic, their toughest test was in the last 16. He took us on at a time when both United & Arsenal had peaked (United resources wise, Arsenal materialisticly). At Inter, he had the undisputed best the league had to offer and possessed a CL record which hinged on 4 outstanding tactical performances (4 and a half counting the final against Bayern), almost every other match Inter played out in the CL over both his seasons they were actively poor. And i think Real speaks for itself tbh, bottom line La Liga competitively is a glamourous SPL pre-Rangers demotion with Real being one of it's monopolys, him 'dethroning' Barcelona is impressive but it's not groundbreaking stuff particuplarly when you think he's not going to defend it.
He is the living embodiment of the phrase, 'lose the little bets, win the big ones'. And i rank this innate quality of his extremely highly, to me Benitez's lack of this particuplar source of nous has prevented him establishing the sort of recognition Jose has

This is the problem I have with this jose talk.
Why would he not join us if we came 5th.
Does he not love us like you love him.
Rafa for all his faults has said he would still manage Liverpool FC if asked.
No buts were added to his statement to indicate he would not join them if they were not in the Champions League.
The majority of fans want jose back but for me I would like him to show me he really wants to come back for us and himself. Not because he is running out of options losing out on PSG, Bayern Munich, Man City and Man Utd.

Di Matteo would love to manage us if we came 5th.
Lots of managers would offer their service if we came 5th.

JOSE IS A GENIUS AND PEP IS A GENIUS BUT WE ARE NOT THEIR 1ST CHOICE CLUBS.
Blame Roman, Rafa or the fans but that is the facts.

i agree rafaistheman there are other clubs that would have far more benefits to mourinho than chelsea - chelsea would be rife with political pitfalls

Will do Flash
Although I´m just as sure that Jose will be our manager next season.
I just don´t see where else Roman can go at this point apart from bringing Jose back, especially if he wants to make us a PL winning side again within the next couple of seasons.

Gazza, you just answered your own question. He does both. He's a self obsessed dictator, he needs as much power as he can get and will use the fans as a resource if it helps him attain it - he couldn't have given a damn which direction we'd have gone post 07.
It's a cycle, he'll use politics to attain the power, then use the results of his successful politics to keep the power
