The Split

I like the split.

Controversial, I know, but I think it adds something to our league. I know it's easy for me to say this after yesterday but I don't understand why people hate it so much. I think it adds genuine excitement to the league and for teams who otherwise wouldn't have anything to get excited about.

Yesterday for me had the atmosphere of a last day Europe/relegation play off scenario. It led to an exciting game of football between two teams who went out to win. It was telling that Craig Brown came out after the game and said "if we wanted a win we would have got it" - too often teams go out playing for draws and it makes for a dull game. Yesterday was far from dull and the last 10 minutes especially was just attack v attack and it was brilliant. And I'd have said that even if we hadn't won the game.

I went through the live commentary on the BBC and after the games finished there was a quote from some diddy complaining about the split saying that United, Aberdeen and Killie should have been battling it out until the end of the season. Battling out for what? Mid table mediocrity? For all three teams our season's have been mediocre but the split injected a little excitement. The reality is we won't catch ICT for 3rd and Europe so really our league season is over. And it would have been over a while ago if it wasn't for the split.

Yes, I'd prefer a bigger league of 16 or even 18 but I much prefer this split to the new ridiculous proposals that are hopefully dead in the water. It might not be perfect, it might lead to problems with the number of home games etc, but this set-up we have just now isn't that bad. It has certainly made the last few weeks interesting for a number of teams who would have been wallowing in mediocrity otherwise.

If we can't get a bigger league, I'm more than happy to maintain the status quo.

Yesterday had all the drama that you could ask for with 3 games affecting the split and I don't really mind the split too much (I can think of other solutions though)

But I'm with BH a bit here too, the mid table has been so tight this year that it could have happened that the team in 7th had more points than the team in the bottom European spot how would that be fair It won't happen now right enough but you know what I mean.

But any way DUFC are in the top 6 and 4th is a real possibility and if Celtic have another Hampden off day, and our young squad go for it, could be a smashing wee end to the season

I also think J MacArab is going to be a cracking manager .....

It is unfair on teams who finish seventh with more points than those at sixth.

It happened to ICT a few seasons ago, and the difference in money between those to league positions is HUGE to a club as small as Caley.

I still see it as being naff, and its essentially what the SFA etc are wanting to do with the new reconstruction only on a much grander scale.

Why is it unfair? They obviously have a better chance of collecting points as they play poorer teams.

Im not saying its perfect but the split generates interest and excitement in games that would otherwise be fairly meaningless.

"It is unfair on teams who finish seventh with more points than those at sixth."

I think that's a daft argument to be honest, they're playing weaker teams so you may as well argue that it's unfair QotS have more points than Celtic yet don't get into the Champions League.

I do like the split, I don't see how people can complain about meaningless games then want a larger league. About 6 teams in the EPL have nothing to fight for the rest of the season other than pride. Again it's a case of folk having a downer on the SPL but sooking the EPL boaby, to put it bluntly.

I don't think you would as in favour of it had United not scored that last minute winner yesterday, especially if they then went on to finish with more points.

As you said, the league is very tight this year so the teams in the bottom six aren't much poorer in quality than the top six, making your argument slightly invalid.

Totally agree, I think it's great. Imagine how good it would be if we had some big teams

If they did one in England it would be United, City, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton all playing each other in the last 5 games

Juke I said in the OP id have been saying the same thing even if we hadnt won.

Fully agree Ivan. I was saying to folk around me that it had been fantastic game of football. There is no way that the attacking play shown would have occurred if there had been nothing riding on it. Just as you say Ivan, I would was thoroughly enjoying the game well before we scored and it was great just to see two teams with something to play for.

Having said that. It was fecking brilliant when Boulding popped in that goal. Best moment at Tannadice since Robertson's late winner against Rangers in 2010

Best moment for me was the 1st 15 seconds of the Rangers game but anyway, AK the incentive should be there to win and get better every week especially playing in a derby game like yesterday. The team (any team) should be playing like there life depended on it every week, there is surely unbelievable amounts of incentive for a football player??

To improve personally, to get noticed for your national team, spotted by a bigger club, better quality of wag ,more money and so on. Average SPL players probably earn more than twice more than 3 times what I do and I work to the best of my ability every day

Surely there should be no such thing as a meaningless game
