According to the BBC, in a programme to be aired in the near future, the most famous name in sport is the New York Yankees rounders , er Baseball team. ?

I beg to differ. A more famous team is Sheffield Wednesday for one
Plus there are individuals in sport whose name is more famous - for example Jesse Owens, Seve Ballesteros, Sachin Tendulkar, Geoffrey Boycott.
What do you think?

The Olympic games I would have thought.
If you're looking for the name of a player or a team, I think we need more criteria.
Are we asking what is the name which the most people in the world have heard of ?
If so, it's probably the Chinese basketball player who's in the NBA or that Chinese hurdler.
Maybe drogba's up there.
I think you need more criteria though because for me that doesn't really tell you anything.

No JPB , I'm not looking for any of the stuff you mention. I've come to the conclusion that the answer is whatever you want it to be, depending on your interests, your cultural background, nationality etc.
There are no right or wrong answers. MY view is that, as baseball is not on my radar of interest, and taking all the criteria available to me, I don't believe that the New York Yankees is the most famous name in sport.
I leave it up to everyone else to have their own point of view and they can use whichever criteria they want.

Pierre de Coubertin hands down, he'll be the only one still talked about in 100, 200 etc etc ... years.
