A manager doing well.....

Ex-Derby County left-back and genuine all-round top man Chris Powell inherited an under-achieving Charlton Athletic side, and had to restructure his squad with minimal investment and using freebies and loans. Manages to get promoted and currently, in his first season in the Championship finds his team sitting 9th in the table and on the back of an amazing 6 goal away win at Barnsley.

I've been critical of Nigel Clough for a couple of seasons, and have been patiently waiting to be proven wrong, and my fork has hovered over the humble pie maybe once or twice, but overall my opinions seem about right.

Many other fans, perhaps blinded by romance of the Clough name, perhaps suckered into the theory that lack of transfer budget somehow stops managers from managing the eleven players on the pitch properly will defend Clough's performance, preferring to blame the board, the fans, the weather, the referee, the grass on the pitch and anything else.

So, I'd like to compare the two managers, Chris Powell Vs Nigel Clough.

I don't believe Charlton have spent more on players, wages, transfers etc,

According to http://www.transferleague.co.uk/ as far as I can make out Derby have spent a net total of £750,000, Charlton have spent a net total of £1,000,000 on transfers.

How long has Chrissy P had, and how long has Your Nige had, and who was where when the respective managers took over?

Powell > Clough all day, every day

The point that appears to have been clearly missed as it does not suit the agenda of the point argued is

Look at what Powel has achieved in the space of time he has been there.

Just a thought

Clough has made no significant progress from the purely playing aspect of the club in 4 years.

Any progress at all is debateable as to whether it created a better club for the fans or we are just losing less money than before other that we are going and have not really gone anywhere.

Stability is underrated, Clough is overrated.

No-one believes Clough has god like status, no-one believes he is irreplaceable.
But Clough is the man for us in the circumstances we are in.
No experienced name will risk their rep at Derby.
So it would have to be another up an comer from lower leagues. Then he would have to work with Clough's team as there is no money to change it.
Can you not see this?
While the financial situation exists Clough is the only choice. If we get a £10 million to spend then there may be a case to look at who should spend it.
Personally I would like to see Clough given the opportunity to spend that money.

Manage your expectations, financially we are a middle to bottom half Championship Club and Clough has us Slightly better than that.

It's depressing I know but that's how it is . Once you realise that you won't get so wound up.

Can't agree.

If a manager with nous, the ability to make telling substitutions and who would use the depth of squad available to him properly rather than rushing back his favourites even if it means playing them out of position, if that manager came to Derby, he'd have us significantly higher than Clough.

The gravy train is only a possibility for another few seasons: miss out and we may never get on it again.
