F-16 Style Canopy.

What's every ones take on the idea of enclosed cockpits in F1?

I like the idea of them on one hand as they would make F1 cars look quite cool. and this would negate the Massa style injuries.

But on the other hand, I can't get past the idea that in the circumstance of Nick Heidfeld in the last race, he wouldn't of been able to get out as quickly, and however fast they can remove these thinks there is always a chance of a jam and that could lead to unthinkable consequences.

I saw this the other day and thought would it not be easier just to have some sort of ultra tough and aerodynamic windshield rather than a whole enclosed bubble.
That way the driver would be protected from flying objects and could easily jump out the car like Heidfeld has been forced to do twice this season.

yeah that dose in theory sound like a better idea as the other test in that video, but I'm guessing the R&D costs that have already gone into the F-16 Canopy are way higher than the FIA or any F1 team could ever hope to spend in developing a new screen. The screen in the video doesn't seem to hold up to well but it dose deflect the tyre.

Also it would make the cars look like they where from the 1970s, lol.

It is not a good idea at all I don't think. I'm sorry but it kind of defeats half of the object of neck strength and muscular endurance. When driving in a Formula One car through high speed bends, or even and full speed down straights, wind and air passing over the car inevitably has to pass over the drivers head, placing massive loads on the neck muscles.

If F16 style canopies are introduced then it takes one more challenge out of driving a Formula One car!
Also, Formula One, though not dangerous, has always been a risky business and it takes the best and guttsiest drivers usually to get into the sport, so why take the risk away so that half hearted drivers and wannabe legends to get into the sport and make it a complete farce?

Here's another idea, lets make this years Rugby World Cup a big tournament of TOUCH RUGBY!

I don't think an enclosed canopy would make it any easier on the driver. I'm fairly certain most of the strain on necks etc that drivers face is through G force round corners rather than the rushing air hitting them.

F1 would still be a risky sport with or without the enclosed canopies. Other than the Massa incident, the major accidents and injuries of recent years I can think of (Perez & Kubica) have had nothing to do with drivers being exposed.

And anyway who wants to see drivers get hurt?

I imagine it would get pretty hot inside these canopies in the hotter countries too. Too hot to drive fast for 90mins anyway.

Of course it would be affected by completely enclosed canopies, its like putting your hand out of a window, think of the wind resistance on your hand.

You're constantly driving into a head wind so its only hard to move your head forward, which isn't really a problem durring a race.

Like Super Totte...... said, most of the strain on the drivers neck will be due to G-forces under braking or hard cornering.

AlloyMirror: exactly, so by putting a massive bubble in the way, you are effectively moving wind-resistance out of the equation. Yes, I agree, G-Force has its dominant factors through cornering forces and braking, but but sheer wind resistance at 200mph with no windscreen/canopy or any sort is obviously going to put a strain on the human neck, therefore F16 canopy technology is a silly idea is it removes risk/challenge from the driver ability.

By the way, I do not like to see drivers get hurt/worse in the slightest - however, i would like it it Formula One wasn't so safety crazed, these days it seems a farce and the likes of Gilles Villeneuve and Ayrton Senna would turn in their graves at the way the sport has become so civilised and soft. They were hardcore racers, which is what the sport is about, when drivers such as Vettel, Hamilton and Di Resta come along, drivers who are willing to take risks for that one extra place, they are punished by the FIA for "being dangerous.." the FIA, and FOTA and most drivers alike need to man the **** up!!
