Hi all,
I know there are many on here that live every day in hope that we sign that elusive, tough, classy central midfielder to partner Carrick that would go a long way to help complete the United jigsaw. An interchangeable left sided attacker wouldn't be too bad either.
Personally, as you will all know, I am 99% certain that this won't be happening. Cynical as ever. But, does this quote from Sir Alex this morning worry anybody?
"We'll look at one or two bodies to come in. You’ve got to remember there are a lot of young players we expect to improve and take that into consideration."
It would worry me. I take from that, that the likes of Cleverley and Jones will be viewed as those young players likely to improve, hence, playing them in midfield would be the consideration, considered.
Anybody else worried about this or trying their utmost best to convince themselves that the Gundogan's of this world could be coming in? Or are people pleased by the quotes that have come out of the club over the past few days?
Discuss.
Worried?

I do think Powell will be quality but needs 2 seasons on loan with someone like Swansea where he should flourish.
I still dont get the Zaha signing.
Given the 16M spent on Young, I dont see what Zaha will offer that Young doesnt already.

I know Ferguson has talked about how he often talks to RVP about tactics and was surprised how knowledgeable he is. I wonder if Ferguson has ever talked to Kagawa about his Dortmund team mates.

With regards to Powell, if all he is going to get is the odd cup game, I think it is pretty pointless keeping him around, to be honest. The only reason SAF didn't loan him last season was because he wanted him to acclimatise him with the club.
Had he have come up through the ranks, I think SAF would have loaned him last year.

Fair point, be nice to get him in for some sub appearances if we're 'cruising' which we rarely do these days. I see your point about the loan if he had come through the ranks.

Isn't that exactly why he didn't go out on loan, I'm sure Ferguson even stated that when he bought him. He felt he needed to settle into how United's youngsters train and develop with René Meulensteen very key to that.
Now we don't have a points tally to chase and the fact Ferguson gave Januzaj a squad number this week I think we could see Powell, Januzaj and some others getting game time, would be nice to see.

No matter how hard I try to see something and feel it, Zaha just doesn't excite me at all. He tries all these tricks, but he doesnt have the innate quick feet and nimbleness to make it work properly. It's like Welbeck trying to play like Ronaldo.
Anyone else struggling also?

He is only 20 but I don't expect him to set the world alight. But the problem is if there's any club who surely should be buying the hottest youth prospects who will set the world alight we are one of them.
I don't wanna be dismissive of the lad but do we really expect him to be as good as players like Hazard and Lucas and if not (which I don't) then why are we buying him?
I know it's a risk on Ferguson's part because he has a long way to go but we already have 3 other right footed wingers, the signing never really made much sense to me TBH.

I imagine the people that scouted him have seen him more than any of us.
He was voted the best player in the Championship so definitely has something about him.
The thing that makes him stand out to me is that everyone who's worked with him predicts great things. And every single Palace fan i've come across swears he's the real deal.
I am quite perplexed as to what his role will be next season. He'll be 21 in November and I doubt he'll be in the youth squad and I can't see him being loaned out as he just got to the club and is playing at a pretty high level already - in England squads and destroyed United in the league cup 2 years ago so will have improved since then.
I think he'll be on the bench a lot and will probably start a lot of the 'lesser' games like Ronaldo did when he first joined.
And while I have no idea if he'll go on to be as good as Ronnie, their playing styles are similar (as in when Ronnie first joined) but that first season Ronnie played 40 times so maybe it's not too crazy to think that Zaha might play a fair few times too.

In an ideal scenario I'd like United to sign a CM and LW.
However, if we do not and we keep the squad as it is then there has to be more consistency in the selection.
For me the GK and defence are sorted and we have five centre halves as well as four full backs. In my opinion the full backs should cover each other and the centre halves should remain as centre halves unless there is an injury crisis (or other unforseen crisis).
Forward line is the same with Rooney, RVP, Hernandez and Welbeck as the four options.
The wingers should also be covered with Valencia, Nani, Young and Zaha.
The midfield has to be a choice between Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson and Giggs with Fletcher a possibility.
Kagawa who I have not forgotten could be played as a wide midfielder or tucked in.
When you list what we have there I think it is obvious where we lack real quality. This being the midfield and left wing. It could be argued that we lack real depth there as well.
That is why I think people are saying CM and LW. When you break it down these are the areas where we need to strengthen. However, if no one comes in then what I would like to at least see is players playing in their preferred positions. If Cleverley, for example, isn't up to the task in CM then Jones or Giggs shouldn't be replacing him. It should be another specialist CM which is why I think you need two players for each position. RVP wouldn't be replaced by Carrick if he wasn't firing, he would be replaced by another striker and that I think is what we should be doing now.
Sorry for the long winded post, and if I had taken more time I probably could have written it in a more concise manner, but I think that the addition of just two players (such as Bale and Gundogan) would move this side from good to very good. Certainly enough to challenge for the CL whilst also sticking to the United ethos of entertaining football.

*Kagawa - tucked in wide midfielder or No.10.
