Loss of Pride

Its only a friendly and we did field a weakened side, but I am a tad concerned by this loss.

We still had Bent, Albrighton, Makoun, Delph and Ireland - in the last three games, weve managed a single goal...

I think you forgot that Mcleish was in charge .... Defensive minded with Bent up top by himself with 2 defensive midfielders .. Dosent this just say what we all feared ??!!

Last nights team was the team we will be abe to field when we have injuries. This just shows how little depth we have in the squad after so many players have left this summer.

Clearly we are weaker than last season. We have fewer players having only brought in two players, albeit good ones. I thought we needed more depth anyway but we drastically need more depth now.

We've lost Downing, Young, Friedel, Reo Coker, Pires, Bradley and Walker from last season: 7 players who would have been either in the first team or on the bench. Add two players and we're five down on last season, although we do have Ireland back but we don't know yet if he'll be a liability or not. Warnock's back but I never thought he was that good. People talking about him going to the World Cup forget that he was only there because Baines dropped out, Bridge decided not to play with Terry, and Gibbs was injured.

What irritates me the most though is that we're still weak at the back. Dunne will cost us points rather than win us points, and Collins, whilst better, is not exactly a quality centre back. Cuellar could have been a top player but now I think his time has passed. We should be building from the back. Lesser sides than us like Fulham have done this with the influential Hangeland. Blackburn have Samba, Everton have Jagielka, Sunderland have strengthened with Brown and O'Shea (okay they were squad players at UNited but they'd still get in our team).

We need more quality in centre mid, and perhaps another winger, but more pressing concerns for me are the lack of any real quality at the back, except perhaps with the potential Clark possesses.

And if Lerner does nothing to strengthen these areas we will once again struggle. I would love to eat my words and see our kids perform miracles, but that is quite simply not going to happen. Please Mr Lerner release the funds from Young and Downing's transfers so that the season isn't as bad as it looks like being.

I agree with most of what is said here. Our squad was desperatly thin on numbers last year, hence why all the young players played so many games. This year we are even weaker, having lost two of our best three player (bent being the other). The defence is terrible and anyone can see that. Dunne and Collins are prone to making errors. Warnock was playing badly before he was dropped and Young seems a bit injury prone and doesnt seem as though he really wants to be at Villa. Maybe we will make a few signings later on in the window, after City, Unied etc have finished their summer spending but im not holding my breath.

It is going to be awful to watch this year. I have Blues fans gloating that we have him in charge.
