Firstly I am fully aware of the revenue the CL brings & the type of player you can attract.
However, maybe we need a season whereby we don't have intense weekday games against some of the best in Europe. Lets be brutally honest we are not going to win the CL next season.
If we get 4th, it will be Groundhog Day once again. Wenger and the board become hero's again and the world is better place. It's something our club always like falling back on, the fact that we have achieved CL football but ignore the fact that we are no longer challengers in the league or cup completions.
If we get fourth I honestly don't see the type of investment that we desperatley require. Possibly 2 players with 1 leaving. Wenger will do his best in trying to convince the fans that we have a strong squad and the classic line that there is no value in the market.
Yes it could become very difficult to get back into the top 4 but maybe it is something we need.
We can concentrate soley on the league, probably have less injuries and possibly have a better chance in the cup completions.
Listen obviously I want us to get fourth but see the positives in the long run if we don't get there.
Who knows it could be the wake up call the club needs and we may actually invest seriously into the squad in order to get back into 4th.
Maybe a season of no CL is what we need!

We have to spend this summer, we have no choice.
Chelsea under Mourinho will spend big and be contenders and then you have the Manc clubs who will be up there.
Unfortunately it will be another battle for 4th but we need to try and seperate ourselves from the likes of spurs and pool

What I want for this summer is that we build a team that will comfortably get top 4 and win the FA cup. We will really be able to push from there.

I think you've written a good article Troy with some valid points. However, ask yourself the following:
In reality, are we more or less likely to spend big without the Champions League revenue? When you include the money for qualifying, prize money p/game and the massive 25+ Million (depending how far you get) from the TV rights.
You mention dropping out sparking a change, this is possible; but knowing our tight board and the years of promises about spending big in the summer, which have never come to fruition. Do you really believe they will spend more in this situation?
