I just want to see a new super quality centre half in our squad. Arsenal lack a very good back line but more importantly a special centre back that can play alongside Vermaelen. Arsenal must sign players before the Champions League play-off games. I do not get it why he has not still added a new centre half into the team. Everybody knew our main problem for last season, which was a lack of consistent centre half defender other than Vermaelen, and this had an impact on holding out to our leads. Let's hope this season, we can sort out this problem.
I hope this season Wenger can decide about players such as Vela, Djourou, Rosicky, and Arshavin, whether they will remain at the club for next season. We all know what Rosicky and Arshavin can do if they hit their best. However, Vela and Djourou are too young but that does not mean they can get away with for their less consistent hard-work.
Djourou and Vela showed flashes of great performances but never remained that way. I would hope Vela and Djourou do not feel unwanted by this club.
Vela might say i am not a winger, but that would not stop him to become a better player for us. I know he can become a great player if he works hard and not find intimidating for all tackles, he faces whenever he is on the pitch.
Djourou has all the attributes to be a fantastic centre half, strong, height with good speed. However, he cannot seem to perform consistently for us. So I would say he is mainly our first choice centre half defender this new season behind Vermaelen, fresh signing and Koscielny.
P.S
I am not happy about Gibbs being our first left back. We all know he is great going forward, but he is not athletic as Troare and Clichy coming back quick to defend. However, this issue is not that important since Wenger decided to stick with what he has got, but we expect a super quality centre half.
I DO NOT CARE ABOUT FABREGAS SAGA

I don't even know if I want a new centre-back any more. If we look at our realistic targets, it'd be Samba, Cahill, Jagielka in that order for me. But Koscielny and Vermaelen each have some big merits. Vermaelen looks like he has some leadership qualities, he's a great header of the ball for a fairly short centre back. Koscielny has made some astonishing tackles under huge pressure, and while I admit that every now and then this has led to a foul, he has had a great first season. Really, this will be their second full season each, and their first together as a duo. Add to that Djourou's season (and his ten-game partnership with Kos where we were astounding defensively), Bartley and Miquel who look promising, and do we really want to disrupt this with an expensive, not world-class signing that may or may not work?
And Squillaci.

Andrei Sergeyevich Arshavin - Arsene and I must fight for our rights, Arsene and I must fight to survive. (U4416)
Have thought this for an absolute age but as soon as you say it you get slated

We need a cb simple as that, you say we are fine with 3 good choices but reality is at least one will get injured for half the season. We need to rotate like united do throughout the season to keep the squad more fresh.

You make some good points, but imo we definitely need another CB.
Like Hello My Name Is Vermaelen is saying, one of our defenders in bound to have an injury which will rule him our for long periods, in this scenario, we would only 2 fully fit and capable CBs, and we just can't rick that imo.
So basically, what I'm saying is that we need a good CB who doesn't mind sitting on the bench and being 3/4th choice. We need depth in our squad!
I don't rate Samba, Cahill or Jagielka, but if I had to choose, I'd take Cahill.

Major_G_Gooner - Free Cesc? Surely he's worth more than that! I had to pay a quid for my Evian this morning, and Cesc is far more satisfying than that! (U1088)

Do you know why we have to sign centre half? Because we want to convince the players and the media that we are not afraid of spending and improving the squad in order to win a trophy. Nonetheless, if Arsenal does not sign a centre back and one usual mistake occurs during the season then that could have an impact on the players and they may say “here we go again” in which could lead to a bad season. I understand your point about Samba, Jagielka, and Cahill. I do think they are better than Kosicleny and can perform same as level as him if they have faced Barcelona. Even so, players care about signings and they are influenced by the teams around them. United increased their squad even though i do not think they have added players with winning mentality. Perhaps, Sneijder will be that player. Therefore, there is a very good chance Arsenal could win the league this season even if it means they were to lose Fabregas and Nasri at the same time. Gervinho is exceptional for what we have seen from him so far. We are also sure Mata will come if Fabregas leaves the club, as a result, we won’t face creativity problem. Gervinho will replace Nasri.
Djourou can be useful rotation in FA Cup and League Cup games. However, I do not understand why we got to keep Squillaci, who I think the worst player I have seen in Arsenal shirt over the years.

Kamran pretty much sums up my opinion entirely, I don't see anything wrong with a Kossy-Vermaelen partnership and Djourou is excellent backup - in fact if he could rediscover his form from the first half of last season before his injury then it would be hard to deny him a starting spot.
Also I think Wenger may well agree with this policy - he's shown it by bringing in the likes of Silvestre and Squillaci the last couple of seasons. Yes, neither of them have been successful in most respects but you can see what the idea was behind them - bring in defenders with top-level experience (between them Champions league, La Liga, Premiership, France caps etc) that don't mind playing only 5-10 games a season. If we could continue with this idea and find someone that can do well, then I think we'd have a very strong defence next season.

We need not only a quality CB, we also need a LB and an aggressive, dynamic holding midfielder. At the moment we not have a decent back-up for the holding midfielder position, not even to think about having some tactical variability for example in playing 2 midfielders sitting just in front of the defence. I am actually not so convinced that TV will become as good as before his injury. We do not know about his fitness and there might be also set backs with his injury. So do not have high expectations on him. I think Djourou and Kosc will improve next season, but neither of them is a top quality defender. Sagna is actually the only top defender we have.
