I don't think it would be an issue him leaving, and actually it would be an issue if he stayed. The reason I say this is because he will have certain demands which I feel would prevent Moyes playing how he might want to set out (i.e a different formation to 442)
I also believe that Kagawa needs to play off the striker, we've seen glimpses of something special here, and even for Japan in that role he just oozes class. If Rooney stays what happens to Shinji? Will Moyes palm him off to the wing like SAF effectively did? Why should Rooney get what he wants (play all the time in striker position) when other players have to sacrifice their best positions?
Let's face it, Rooney is a great talent, but the fact is he hasn't been consistent and you could argue that his best has already happened (Torres springs to mind).
I believe if we made a couple of signings (midfield, wide midfield, full back) we could play a more fluid attacking style with a 5 man midfield with RVP as the spear-head. (Hernandez and Welbeck in reserve)
I just really feel whatever happens, Kagawa will be so important for us this season, I'm actually excited to see him play and just hope he plays in his best position.
Would Rooney leaving be a big issue?

I'm also not naive enough to think that everything SAF is gospel and not designed to create the intended havoc that he wanted..... with his last sentance after picking up the PL trophy, he decided to use that moment to stick it to Rooney and get the payback he desperately wanted since the first problems.
Watch Moyes' press conference today.... I am 99% sure he will say that Rooney did not put in a transfer request.

SAF loves the club more than any of us he would not cause a rift before leaving.
Everyone was talking about Rooney being unhappy and yes he was because he was dropped for the big games and was played out of position. But if he isnt good enough then he has to get better.
So I dont see how it isnt obvious he has handed a transfer request in. Worst case he mentioned leaving as he wanted to play in his natural position and will pursue this if he doesnt get assurances.
2 things will happen -
He stays if he plays in his natural position
He doesnt get assurances and will be off

SAF is not infallible
You listed RVP, Stam and Beckham as being better than Rooney..... So surely SAF would have put his spat with them behind him, for the good of the club?
I'd place my house on a bet that Rooney didn't put in an official transfer request.
If, whoever, he had a chat with the boss and said something along the lines of "I'm not really happy with the role i have had this season, moving positions each week".... Doesn't that ring true with 99% of posts on here during the season, saying SAF is playing players out of position, to the detriment of the team?

But thats like me saying well on this occasion SAF thought of the club and didnt mix things up.
Beckham was sold because his image was spoiling the clubs image on a commercial level, also add in the spats with his wife he was always going to leave.
RVN crossed the manager and was sold and Stam was the one he does regret.
But Rooney has been out of form, is hardly the spearhead of the team anymore and with the manager leaving I dont believe for a minute he thought of himself and not the club.
He knows Rooney is no longer important to the club and would have got rid this summer if he was still manager.
I hope Moyes tells him to pee off if he demands to play. He must earn that right, especially when he's on the wage he is on.

Rooney is still past it I think a blind man can see that

again, this is where we differ.
last season wasn't his best... but the season before was sublime. Nothing to suggest he can't repeat that.
In my view, there are just too many people here who have a "grass is greener" mentality and want the 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 of other clubs and a silky #10.
What they, inexplicably, fail to notice is that we just keep winning and winning with our current system.... And Wayne plays a huge part in that, even in his poor(er) seasons.

Agree to disagree, I dont think he will ever replicate the form of the past, I think he peaked early.

I want Roo to leave but I think some are being harsh about his contribution. I have no problem acknowledging he has been one of the best strikers around over the last 8-10 years and overall he has been our most important player since Ron left.
I want him to leave because I can't stand him, I don't think his heart is in it and because he was disrespectful to the club but give him some credit for his footballing contribution!
He is replaceable but still a top striker. Just not technical enough to be a "no.10" imo.

Rooney has scored nearly 200 goals. At any other club he'd be a legend.

He's clearly a major figure and has been a great player for us. It's also understandable that the fans' emotional connection with him suffered when he announced he was leaving and that subsequently to that any dips in form or perceived dips in effort are going to be magnified. I think that would apply to any other club as well.
