The Zodiac Serial Killer

Very off topic but has anyone read much about this? I find the whole serial killer thing rather interesting but have to say this case, which remains unsolved to this day, sent shivers down my spine just reading about it. The Zodiac, as he called himself, claims to have murdered 37 people in Southern California in the late 60s to early 70s. The main suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, was never arrested, however there is a lot of circumstantial evidence which indicates he may have been the killer. Nothing was ever proved with Police having approximately 2,500 suspects to this very day. The case remains open in 2013.

The details itself are lengthy, but I shall put a link the to wiki page for anyone who wants to have a look.

I am not sure anyone has ever managed to remain undetected whilst taunting the Police for so long with letters and even phone calls. The creepy and most annoying part this killer is famed for sending four ciphered messages to the Police, along with other normal letters.

During one of the normal letters he advised that solving the ciphered texts would reveal his identity and the Police would "have him".

To date only one of the messages has been definitively deciphered. Here it is below:

I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST DANGEROUE ANAMAL OF ALL TO KILL SOMETHING GIVES ME THE MOST THRILLING EXPERENCE IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN GETTING YOUR ROCKS OFF WITH A GIRL THE BEST PART OF IT IS THAE WHEN I DIE I WILL BE REBORN IN PARADICE AND ALL THEI HAVE KILLED WILL BECOME MY SLAVES I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MY NAME BECAUSE YOU WILL TRY TO SLOI DOWN OR ATOP MY COLLECTIOG OF SLAVES FOR MY AFTERLIFE. I think it is loosely based off of it. Scorpio is based off of Zodiac.

Yeah with a name like that it's goto be. About the Zodiac murders i think the ciphers where just a load of bowls, he was just tring to make a name for himself.

It is true because he sent the newspaper a letter mocking the police about the confrontation.
__________

I saw that but how does that make it true? I might have missed something obvious but police would've been bound to ask people in the area and he could've just claimed he was one of them and taunted them for it.

I agree I think the ciphers had no meaning whatsoever and he just wanted people to waste their time whilst he sits back and watches.

Tbag - He described the confrontation in detail and one of the policeman in the car confirmed it.

in the unsolved cases suspicion is always on those who are connected to those in power

"What is even more terrifying is after he killed the driver, he walked off and police stopped him asking if he saw anything, Zodiac said "he ran off down there" and fooled the police. The police at the time were told it was a black male by youngsters who witnessed the killing from a window so I guess that was partly why he got away. He confirmed this by writing in the letter something along the lines of "I fooled you, you stopped and talked to me and you idiots fell for it"

I didn't know this. In the film the two cops mentioned that they saw a man (from a distance) who fit the (revised) description but that they didn't talk to him because at the time they were looking for a "black male". If they actually spoke with Z then that's two more (close up) eye witnesses I didn't know about. Strange that Fincher would get that wrong because his research seems to have been meticulous from what I have read.

"Barrett "Barry" Wysling."

I personally think the killer was Richard Giakowski
