The difference between price and value

Another Benteke article I'm afraid. My question is now he has handed in a transfer request its more than likely he will be sold. The question is how much for.

He has 3 years remaining on his contract, which inflates his value, however he has made it clear he wants to leave which reduces it.

Now I keep reading how he kept Villa up last season which I seem to remember was worth an estimated £60m. So is this not his true value. I don't think for one second he is worth that, nor will any club pay it. However is this not his true value.

Therefore he hands in a transfer request, Villa say "fine as soon as we get a bid for £60m, we'll act on it" what happens when nobody does. Again not saying we should hold out for that sort of money, but reportedly Villa were adamant that an opening bid of £30m would be the minimum they would entertain to discuss it. And I'm not sure many sides would take a punt even at that money. So is there a chance he will stay at Villa, and if so how probable is it?

We (Spurs) had it with Berbatov and Modric and yet last season finished with a record Premier League points total. Sell high and reinvest the money well, and then expect it to happen again.

OK. Fact. Benteke didn't "keep Villa up". He scored some brilliant goals. He failed to score a number of times when he seemed to have lost concentration. He scored a few goals at critical stages of fairly evenly balanced matches. And disappeared from sight when we were under the cosh. If you look back through last season's results you realise that no one player kept us up; Weimann and Gabby contributed some really important goals, but overall the real hero was the team as a whole, which dragged itself out of adversity, and ended playing some scintillating football.

Benteke has talents, exceptional talents, and could become a great player. But he's not there yet, by a long way. His value to us is that in a much improved Villa he himself can improve and will push Villa that bit further down the road of becoming a real force. His value to CL teams is that the potential is there, surrounded by world class players, to produce something extra, that bit of distinction, which can turn critical matches.

So what should the price be? Villa have almost nothing to gain by selling; our finances are now reasonable and our interest is in building up a formidable team. The only gain is that a large sum of money is always useful, and also rids us of somebody who wants to go. The advantage to CL teams is that competition is fierce at the top, and it's worth shelling out taking a chance on a player who might prove to have the edge which makes the difference.

So, IF there are any CL teams out there prepared to take a gamble, then the price has got to be high. £30m, or £25m with £5m of add-ons, seems about right.

Who might cough up? In England, I reckon only Arsenal or Chelsea. Both have the sort of top managers who can get the best out of players, so they may reckon the gamble is worth it. Somehow, though, I think Arsenal may have doubts; they've had enough of players who move on when it suits them. Chelsea can afford to take a gamble, and may if Mourinho decides that Benteke has the right talents. MU is just possible, but I don't think so.

I hope Chelsea do cough up. Then we can move on.

If reports are to be believed he would prefer Spurs over Chelsea (I am barred from using ski - weird!) as he would be guaranteed to play. Now I really don't understand his mentality as unless Spurs have tapped him up with the promise of mega wages why would he go there? The excitement of Europa league football? No disrespect to Spurs but they are not in the Champions league, don't pay silly wages and are his (allegedly) hero's Arsenils fiercest rivals. Something just doesn't add up here. Let's get our £25 mill and move on.

i hear its going to be Chelsea. 7-10 mill (our money back) plus Lukaku. I reckon we would be doing very very very well to get that!

But, Lukaku may well be another Benteke. Last season he was saying things like Benteke needs to leave Villa and go to a bigger club. Same sort of attitude. Not wanted at Villa. Super egos, lack of reality.
