He should be locked up for a year and made to go cold turkey before it's to late!

For over 20 years I suffered with an addiction to the drug nicotine. For the bulk of that time I was smoking around 30 cigarettes a day, more at weekends. But despite never having a smokers cough and still paying football until my early forties, a little over 8 years ago I decided enough was enough and I stopped completely.
It certainly wasn't easy, in fact it was a living hell for the first 3 or 4 months. I lost count of the amount times I nearly succumbed to temptation, especially after a few beers or when I saw others around me lighting up and having that satisfied look on their faces.
Even now, eight years later, there are times and situations when I look on enviously at people enjoying a puff of a cigarette and could quite easily grab it out of their hand and restart the habit.
But, no matter how drunk, or stressed, or down I'm feeling, I've always had the strength to say 'DON'T', and I never have. I believe that strength is called willpower.
When I was a smoker, I never once felt I had a disease. There was no medical condition that, against my will, forced a cigarette between my fingers and made me light it. I smoked because I wanted to and I stopped because I wanted to.
If Paul Gascoigne wants to stop then only he can make it happen now. If he doesn't, then friends and family can know they did all they could, but now is the time to let fate take its course.

Care to explain how on earth Alcoholism is a disease? Alcoholism goes into the same category as gambling and smoking.

You can change, or even cure, those by altering your own behaviour. Can you cure Cancer by changing your own behaviour? The answer would be no.

He has an addiction to alcohol, probably brought on by mental issues, which is an illness not a disease.
Gazza`s problems obviously go deeper than just enjoying a drink. His ex wife should pay for his treatment, she has all his money after all.
