Benteke

I really would not be happy if we bought this guy for the quoted 20-25 million.

I mean, he has had one good season in the premier league at a mediocre club. As someone stated in an earlier article, I don't think he will be able to play his game like he does at villa anyway, as teams tend to attack poorer teams, rather than set up to park the bus like we mostly have to deal with.

Don't get me wrong. I think he is a good player and if we were to buy him in for say around about 8-10 mil and we were to buy another striker like soldado, I'd be happy with that.

I just don't feel he is what we are looking for to lead the line for us as our main striker right now.

No idea if Benteke would turn out to be another Berbatov or Bent / Bentley (too many B's for my liking), but Spurs definitely need to sign an out and out striker before very long or my nerves will be shredded. I can't influence the transfer fee / wages and I'm fairly sure our chums at WHL won’t be reading JA606 so I don't care if he is £25m or £250m so long as the outcome is positive for Spurs. As Chronic says, the dearer a player becomes the greater the risk but I would add that you need to speculate to accumulate. We now know, more than in other season I can remember, we need a top flight striker or be resigned to losing not only Bale and the likes of AVB next summer but most importantly, our credibility as a serious challenger. We’ve had a few chances in the last few years and are so close it hurts.
As for getting Benteke for £8-£10m, which leg were you talking about?

Unclear as to why my comment makes me a clown? Another one what exactly?

The last line in your post was explained in the comments several times

Ah I see. Even though I read quite a few of the earlier comments and then the latest page I made the mistake of replying to his main point which suggested we should take him if he were offered at £8-£10m which is plainly not going to happen. That makes me a clown. Ho hum.

Interesting debate gents. I understand don and others frustration for a striker and I am sure the club are working on it. But we must not be reckless. That's all I am saying

No way.

£25m for a (so far) one-season wonder. If he'd been some wonderkid that everyone had heard of but nobody had gambled on (like Liverpool did with Torres) then I'm all for it. But in this day and age there's hardly any unknown wonderkids because the whole world is looking for them. Stefan jovetic is available for the same price, I'd rather get him.

We shouldn't be reckless I agree Chronic. That's unlikely to happen with Daniel at the helm. And I also agree with Lion that for the Villa asking price there is probably someone as good if not better out there. I just hope we are looking. I'm not going to start worrying just yet but soon...

Thinking about the row on another article earlier and I can see both arguements:

- stop moaning, it's July 10th not August 29th

And

- get a move on levy/AVB and go rectify the glaring weakness

There's obviously still a long time left in the transfer window and potentially a lot more business to be done between clubs, so throwing toys out of the pram now is pointless because those who do could look very stupid if in 3/4 weeks time we actually make a signing better than Benteke (the player many are pushing for)

.... But, we all knew that this summer there was going to be a massive striker merry-go-round involving the likes of falcao, cavani, lewandowski, jovetic, Suarez, higuain, aubameyang, villa and Rooney. We know lewandowski is going nowhere right now and cavani, falcao, villa, soldado and aubameyang have already moved clubs, and it's obvious that clubs want to replace quality with quality. So we clearly don't want to be standing by watching while all the good strikers are snapped up (yes I know some of those were never likely to come to us). Hopefully we do sign one of the attainable ones from above or of that quality in due course (due course being within 3 weeks IMO)

* whoops, put soldado's name in the wrong place. He hasn't gone anywhere as yet
