having a quick look at the front pages of the football news sites when I got back from work today, it was interesting to see the following:
Southampton pay £12.5m for a celtic player unproven at the top level (following their £12m signing of ramerez last year)
Swansea paying £12m for unknown Bony
these are relatively 'small' clubs, spending nearly twice wolves record fee from our own spell in the top flight.
add to that albion's reported £3-4m a year in wages to a 34 year old anelka and it seems that the stupid spending levels in the top league are yet to see any significant drop. but whereas man city can afford to throw away £30m+ taking a chance on another foreign striker, and chelskí won't be too badly hit if they had to write off £50m flop torres, Southampton, albion and Swansea are all sides we would have considered wolves to be in competition with when we were in the prem. and yet I can't imagine the day M&M would sanction £24m on two players.
we're two leagues away and a lot of hard work to be done in the next few years. but I also think morgan has to work out now what he wants should we start to rise. because the financial model he tried to stick by will get harder and harder to work with, once even the lesser sides in the premier league have squads costing £100m+.
money, money, money

Cinci dearest
If you think Wolves haven't sold out you might want to research how much we spent in our last year in the premier league and also why Sir Jack sold the club for a tenner on the promise of major reinvestment

I didn't mean sold out in that way pundit........what i detest more is when a club just buys its way forward as its a false situation not based on being well run but by simply buying whats required to achieve a short term goal.

Scary that so much is being spent on being at best a mid table team. When Wolves get back there its probably what they need to do, but it leaves a bad taste that money is so important.
And I would still question whether the likes of Swansea or Southampton would be in better shape with 3 x £4m players than one for £12m.
I never forget the hard lesson Wolves learned from the Barnwell era. Wolves sold their best player at the time, Steve Daley for a British record fee and spent all the money on buying Andy Gray. Villa in turn spent the money on 5 players. It wasn't long after that Wolves were relegated and Villa were European Champions.

My feelings exactly DJ, as i talk to scores of saints fans often, i always ask what the point of paying 12 million for a glitzy winger in Ramirez was when they had barely a backbone and plenty of weak positions?!

you have to imagine that if wagamam is a success for saints and they stop up, he'll force a move to chelskí or spurs the following season as well, leaving Southampton with a minimal profit and back to square one facing a struggle to survive the following year.
or 'doing a benteke' as it has become known.

Didn't all Premiership clubs get a huge increase in TV money for this season...something like an extra 70%.

The money is there to spend for sure Simon. But its the spending of huge sums on relatively unknown players that is making it impossible for young English players to get a game.
No better example than Lukaku who made Albion's season not being able to get a game for Chelsea. And now I read they are prepared to offer him in part exchange for Benteke. If I were Villa, and that is true, I would bite their hand off

Sorry but Wilfried Bony is an Ivory Coast international who has just scored 31 goals in the dutch top flight and you call him an unknown? Wanyama has helped Celtic through one of their best champions league runs in ages. Particularly in Bonys case I think hes a bargain considering.

Lukaku for Benteke plus £10m = Bargain
Chelsea are so daft that they would likely give Villa Lukaku plus £18m.
Villa would be laughing next season. Almost as much as Albion will be crying.
