Im pretty sure most have you have seen us being linked with mertesacker once again. He is available for around 6mil which looks like a good deal for a german international, truth is though i've never seen him play & I was wondering for the people who have seen him play what is he like as a defender. He's quite a tall lad which might mean he lacks some pace but then again he could be quick enough.
So gooners whats he like as a defender and would you see him as a welcome addition to Arsenal
Per Mertesacker

I don't think it'll lead to anything, thats mostly because nothing has so far, but also becuase I don't really think he'd fit into the Arsenal style.
If I remember correctly he is a bit slow. Good defender though, and with a good partner + our full backs covering him, it could work well
However, I do agree with Andrei Sergeyvich Arshavin, if it were to disrupt Verm / Kosc partnership I wouldn't want it

Its hard to argue against signing a CB with 70+ German caps who is in his mid 20s.
I personally think he would improve the Vermaelen/Koscielny partnership, plus it would also give us the option of a LK/PM partnership with TV moving to left back if Gibbs fails to make the grade/ gets injured.
As for his lack of pace, he makes up for it with his reading of the game. He also has a very good disciplinary record, similar to that of Rio Ferdinands.
If the price is really that low, I don't see where we can go wrong.

Rio Ferdinand doesn't get booked because the ref knows he will be in for it. Rio is a very good defender, but why does he have a permanently angry look on his face?

He is surely not the solution to our defensive problems. He had some trouble with injuries last season too. I am torn a bit.

I don't think any one signing is the solution to our defensive problems. I think we need a player who's on a par with Verm, Kos and Djourou, but who doesn't mind being third or fourth choice. We need a left-back as well.

bring him in for christ sake! hes much better than squillachi and djourou. hes germany's first choice centre half and at 6mil, its complete peanuts. he'll add height and steel to our defence. and how is koscielny better than him?

Koscinely reads the game better, doesn't get chucked off the ball (neither does mert but just saying) is faster, better at more intricate tackles, can head the ball well, is fantastic at controling players with skill.
Mertsacker is good, but Kosc is better

Are France really that blesses with CBs or do Germany only have 1 good CB? Because looking at how many caps each has won, and considering Germany have performed far better than Franc recently, it is strange that you believe Koscielny has been that great at Arsenal.

Koscielny is up there with the best, I reckon koscielny and mertesacker partnership would be excellent.
