Competence is a baseline.
If you are not competent in the basics (which for LB/RB is defence) , you better have some compelling reason other than injuries for being in the team.

I think you've just made that up to be honest. He hadn't played for months before he left the club and before that he'd been out injured for most of the previous season, so I don't know how it could have been obvious that his form had dipped. His comeback game from injury was the CL game and he was probably our best player.
