There has been a lot writen already about the rights and wrongs of the ongoing contract talks, this is my view of the situation. We both need each other!
Spurs need GB for two reasons, firstly in our transfer dealings this year we need stars to attract stars, secondly in our quest for champions league qualification, we obviously need the best team we can get.
GB needs Spurs for several reasons also. He is probably an ambitious man, who wants a successful career (trophies etc), but I also think he is a very level headed guy, and also a true family man, after all he likes to go back to Wales to see family once or twice a week, something that will probably not be as possible from Madrid. This alone may be the reason he doesnt seem to be making to many noises about leaving at this time.
How does he need us? well if leaving at this stage is not what he or his family wants, undoubtedly at some stage in the future he will want to prove himself on the world stage so he has to continue to play at or beyond his current level to maintain interest, and having better players alongside him at Spurs will help him do this.
If he has expressed a wish to management that he wants to leave, he will probably have been told that he wont be going anywhere this summer, but if the right bid comes in next year he will allowed to go, so the comment about playing levels still holds true, as he wont want to be seen as a one season wonder, because a bid may not come in at all, or it may be so low that DL knocks it back anyway, and he doesnt get his `dream' move, whereas a season in which he plays a starring role in helping us to CL qualification, and/or a trophy will help to propel both him and Spurs to the next level and guarantee the right bid is made.
Overall I think that the offer of a big new contract is the right move, it protects both us and GB, in terms of his sell on value, and his worth to Spurs as a man.
By the way I dont see ManU as an option for him, because I think he knows already that DL wont entertain a bid from them, unless it was totally stratospheric!
Gareth Bale as I see it

Don't get me wrong, Welbeck is pretty average but he's managed more caps for England than any of your English players in the last 2 years (maybe excluding Parker)
------------
Definitely has more caps in the last two years... Ok maybe apart from one player
I bet he's not veven looked up the STATS.
Poor show, plastic United fan, poor show indeed.

Writing off young players, yep, that's the way to go in football
I'm guessing you guys were part of the 'Get Bale out brigade' when he was apparantly the reason for your 20 odd game no win streak when he started games

Danny Wellbeck
Games 138
Goals 27
Emile Heskey
Games 719
Goals 160
Games 138 * 5.2 = 717
Goals 27 * 5.2 = 140
He's on to score LESS than Heskey

Well this descended pretty quickly.
At least Spurs don't have to worry about CL qualification this year because apparently last years winners are extremely average so they should easily finish above them and just have to worry about keeping the likes of Liverpool off their coat tails.

Is that supposed to be insulting or were you going for nonsensical nonsense from the start?
