It's just a hunch but maybe when bale signed from Tottenham there was a clause that gave Southampton a percentage of the potential sale of bale in the future, does anyone know ?

They traded it for Tommy Forecast

As far I remember being reported, we had a agreed a flat £5m with a further £7m in add-ons, then a couple of years later Southampton were struggling so we paid part of the fee early and forego the rest so we ended paying £8m only.
Only what I read at the time (of the 2nd payment) so not sure of the validity.

Can't believe Fergie refused to pay a few extra millions to get Bale.
As great as Fergie was, his stubborness cost him a few world class players

It was 5m, rising to 10m if memory serves me right.
However they settled for about 8m in total and we did it early. I believe their 15% of any future transfer was taken out too at this point.
They are entitled to a 2/3m as they nurtured him I think

They were skint at the time which is why levy moved in with that extra cash. Smart by levy

Yeh that was a smart move by levy and Southampton are missing out however without that money they might have gone under.
