After his very impressive performances in the Carling Nations Cup tournament and the away victories versus Macedonia & Italy it appears that Simon Cox is now a major rival for Shane Long's quest to become a regular in the ROI side.
Towards the end of last season he also broke into the WBA first team. Whether he will be a regular starter this season remains to be seen.
Cox made his debut in the 5-0 win over NIreland and to cap a good performance he scored a fine solo goal. He then had a perfectly good goal disallowed against Macedonia and ran the lenght of the pitch to score a last minute goal against Italy.
Trapatonni intends using both these players during the friendly with Croatia this week. Jonathan Walters is in danger of being frozen out of future sides as he has again withdrawn from the sqaud. Something which is sure to annoy Trapps.
So who would ROI fans rather see play up front for us , Long or Cox?
Shane Long or Simon Cox?

If we had a qualifying game tomorrow with no Doyle or Keane then I'd go with Shane Long all day. Still, isn't it nice to have these options?

theres no doubt, our options throughout the team are pretty impressive. Fair enough, we havent any world class players other than perhaps shay and dunne (at the minute) but it certainly looks healthy. plenty of options and competition in all the key areas. If we could just qualify for something now it would be a massive boost for the players and other youngsters coming through.

I'd have Shane Long in the team ahead of Kevin Doyle. He scores more goals and his all round contribution is just as good. Cox will not get a look in at the Baggies when Long signs for them.

I would pick long as well but something tells me Cox is now a "favourite" with Trapps.
