Importance of tomorrow

Having watched all the pre-season matches and acknowledging that that is exactly what they have been - friendlies designed for fitness - I still worry around how things have gone and how that might manifest itself once the season begins. I've felt that we have been alarmingly open at the back - whether this is down to constant changing of personnel to get everyone ready or not I don't know, but again last night, the defending, and I include the midfield in this also, was atrocious. We also seem to be second to most balls and haven't had any sustained periods of pressure and possession. We seem laboured and our touch is generally poor.

Tomorrow's match takes on greater significance for me now as a positive result is crucial to raise confidence. Players like Hernandez, Rooney (!!!!), haven't featured at all and others we have only seen fleetingly - Valencia (awful last night again!), Nani, Kagawa - it all seems a little chaotic despite there only being a week until we kick off the league campaign.

I know this is basically a friendly tomorrow but in the circumstances, how important is tomorrow's match now?

I absolutely guarantee that if/when Baines and Fellaini are signed the mood on here (and in the squad) will be lifted tremendously.

I wouldn't worry to much about the outcome of the Community Shield, the winner of the game has only gone onto to win the league in 5 of the past 21 season or something ridiculous like that, it really is no barometer of how the season pans out.

That said it would be useful for David Moyes to get into the habit of winning trophies at Wembley, just for a snow ball effect and so that he knows he can do it.

When mentioning what Moyes needs to do to make fans happy someone listed sign Fellaini and Baines, i'm not sure that would have the desired effect to be honest, don't Everton value Fellaini at around 25 million and Baines at more than 15?

Can,t wait for tomorrow, get the atmosphere, walk down wembley way, do a left at the bobby moore statue, a few scoops in the man in the moon (wetherspoons) in stanmore before the kick-off, bring it on, Moyes' first trophy in the newly named (by the bitters) community shield final!!

Bruce and Pally
You're right, the Community Shield is no barometer for what will come in the next 9 months, but i think United fans are looking for some shreds of positivity, and especially this pre-season with a new manager at the helm. I think everyone had some expectation of some new signings to mark his arrival as the new boss but in reality its the same squad and much the same football being played.

He will need time to influence the type of football we play (if indeed he intends to change it) but i thought he would have added some new faces by now.

This looks like a squad that needs an injection of confidence which a win tomorrow would help provide.
