The missing piece...

Thoughts on last nights game:

Firstly I like to say I was very impressed with Rooney last night. Yes he was a little rusty due to lack of match fitness, but the usual drive and commitment was plain for all too see! And I'm praying he stays!

Right, to the point, I thought both sides highlighted exactly what is missing from both teams: from United, creatively and flair in the middle of the field and from Chelsea, a decent striker.

Overall i would have taken a draw at the start of the match but in the end i was disappointed we didn't press on when we had the chance. I thought the game was unusually tense, I definitely don't agree with a lot of the posts on here that we played for a draw... Unlike Chelsea! We just struggled to create much against a solid defence.

Slight negatives from the game would be the right side... although I'm happy Jones is getting game time, I can't wait for Rafa to get back. And although i thought Welbeck had a good game, he is no left sided midfielder. More worryingly though It also looks like Valencia has continued where he left off last season... No confidence, no quality, the amount of back passes was unreal!

As for the subs: I was pleased for Young when he came on because he did lift the attack on the right side, I honestly believe he is unfairly treated on here... He was head and shoulders better than Valencia when he came on!

And finally why oh why oh why did Giggs have to come on! We were screaming out for some drive and creativity in the middle! The game was made for Anderson in my books. I wanted Anderson over Kagawa as i felt he would have been physically bullied by Ivanovic, Cahill and Terry. Cleverly is neat and tidy but that's all... Too many safe passes, sits way too deep, unfortunately a squad player at best!

Positives from the game should definitely be Rooney, how he performed and how the crowd responded... It just shows how fickle a lot of fans are, one good performance and all is forgotten! I for one am glad we have Rooney and hope he stays, you must prefer him to having Suarez spending the summer moaning and complaining he wants to leave!

Other positives from the game would definitely have to be our defence! I was more than a little worried off the back of Chelsea's opening two games. I wrongly assumed there movement and pressing would cause our defence no end of problems... However I was wrong and Carrick, Ferdinand and Vidic coped admirably all night.

Again all, sorry for the essay... All thoughts welcome...

Tatty bye bye

This is bull. How can anybody blame our lack of a goal threat on cleverly or Carrick? They co trolled Chelsea's strong attacking midfielders as well as hazard dropping deep.

The problem was the wide men, we need flair, we need creativity, but we need that from a winger.

If we had players with the ability to commit defenders and create chances in Valencia and Welbs positions yesterday, we'd have won, plain and simple.

I'm sick of people saying how rubbish our midfield is when they clearly controlled the game yesterday, kept the ball, won it back and stopped Chelsea's counter attacks.

The sooner people realise the formation Moyes is trying to play the better. Our chances aren't to be created by the midfield, it's the wingers and Rooney.

Thought the same as everyone else that added bit of creativity was missing. Was hoping Kagawa might have got his chance but im not sure if moyes knows were to play him.

Think that game last night showed why we was after fabregas so much but would like to see Kagawa given the chance.

All in all it was a good performance I dont think we played for the draw we was just more cautious then we would have been under fergie

i wouldnt say that at all.

you look at chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, and city and ALL these teams have midfielders who can create.

if we only have midfielders who have the ability to break up play then we have the wrong midfielders.

As Carrick always sits deep and breaks up play we also need a carrier, a link man to link defence to attack!

Not to lump balls forward but to play the ball too feet. Definitely an Ozil, Fabregas, Modric player. I don't think in this situation Fellaini is the answer on his own.

If we had a 'creative midfielder' who didn't want to stay disciplined the way Clevs and Carrick did last might, we'd have been over run and hit on the break.

What I've seen so far suggests we will play two holding midfielders, just like Madrid, Juve, Bayern ect

or he could have created something and given us the win . . swings and rounabouts.

Rrf, we have a creative link, hes called kagawa, for some reason though hes currently a bench warmer

Utd seem to be turning into the England football team in that they don't know how to use a truly creative midfielder within the midfield. Teams like Chelsea (and the way they played) will have a field day against Utd. Playing with above average wingers can't do everything.

I won't be surprised if Kagawa leaves Utd somepoint this season. As if Rooney doesn't leave, Kagawa won't be playing very much, which is a shame really.

What do you think Rooneys job is? Carricka Nd Clevs get he ball, and give it to the creative players, it's pretty simple.

The problem yesterday was no matter how many times Rooney put the wide men in a position to make a chance they fluffed their lines.
