Liverpool survived a major scare on Tuesday night as they progressed to the third round of the Capital One Cup.

It all looked comfortable for them after half an hour. Raheem Sterling gave them the lead after just four minutes with a bursting run and finish, and Daniel Sturridge scored his third goal in as many games on 29 minutes after Steven Gerrard set him up.

But things changed in the second half and Notts County rallied. Yoann Arquin reduced the deficit after the hour mark when he headed in following a free kick. And in the last few minutes, substitute Adam Coombes slotted in with his first touch after Arquin set him up.

Things looked even worse for Liverpool when Kolo Toure was stretchered off after they had used up all three substitutes. But at the end of the first half of extra time, Sturridge scored his second to put Liverpool back in front. Philippe Coutinho laid it off to him and he cut inside before managing to squeeze it into the far corner.

And Jordan Henderson wrapped it up with 10 minutes to go in extra time, after he picked it up from midfield and burst forward, nutmegging his man and coolly slotting it into the corner.
