Why are we spending €36m on a relatively unknown player? Does the club realize that it will be our record signing if the deal is complete?
What are the players' credentials? How many International caps has he won? Ok lets forget for a second his international caps as its impossible to get into the Spain side but the guy isn't even rated that highly like say Koke, Illaramendi or Javi Martinez. The highlight of his career is putting decent performances against a United side with Giggs in it. A couple of my Spanish friends have told me he has rarely shone in the big games against Madrid, Barcelona etc. I don't get spending our record amount on a unknown player from a midtable team in Spain.
He isn't worth more than £10m. Had we bid the remaining 35-10=25m more on Cesc Fabregas there was a chance we could have got him.
This is monumental wasteage of resources.
The only reason fans are creaming over him because he is Spanish and plays in midfield.
Herrera - Not worth more than £10m

He isn't worth 35m. We're not paying 35m.
We're paying 30m.

We are paying €35m apparently.
Still a monumental waste of money on an unproven player.

People have still not answered my question - How is Herrera remotely close to being worth 35m?
--------------------------------
Athletic Bilbao will not sell him for less than the release clause in his contract. They are reasonably well off financially.
We are interested in signing him due to lack of numbers/quality in our CM.
If we go ahead and try and sign him, we will have to pay 35m Euro's to release him from his contract.
Therefore he will be worth 35m. To us who need him. To Bilbao who value his release at 35m. Supply and demand. Quite simple really.
