First Ever Game

Word up ya'll - this board is depressing at the minute. It makes tacking endless boring work e-mails easier.....so, too recap on happier times.

Whats everyones first game they went to? What happened? Any funny stories to go with?

Mine was 24th September 1996 - BWFC v Bristol City in the coca cola cup, 2nd round 2nd leg. I was never a big footie fan - was always more into cricket - I didn't even have a team....I guess I followed Newcastle due to the fact my dad worked up there when I was a kid and I like the city and the people!

My best mate took me down. We won 3-1 after extra time. I don't remember much except we won, it cost me £8......and the smell on my clothes after standing in the Burnden Terrace for 2 hours was something I'll never forget, nor ever smelt since! A kind of mixture of meat pies and smoke!

And I was hooked on us ever since....

Sure was a different world in the 70s. Worst period was when they put a fence down the middle of the Embankment with half of it for away fans. The air would be thick with fist sized lumps of concrete flying backwards and forwards and a steady stream of stretchers being carried around the touch line. The games just carried on like this was a fact of life - well it was I suppose. If you are too young to remember all this, well imagine what happens when West Ham occasionally get drawn against Millwall in a cup tie - that sort of thing was normal every Saturday all over the country. I am 95% relieved those days are gone and 5% sort of miss it - the frisson of fear approaching a place of public entertainment

I know just what you mean.

Never saw any big choppers being wielded in the 80's (Oo-er, missus!), but it was always "interesting" going away to places like Burnley, Stoke, Barnsley, Swansea, Stockport and the rest.

And there's a bit of me that misses that "edgey-ness", as it were.

Don't miss getting punched, mind.....

....and I've now got a mental imaged locked in my head of Barry Cowdrill standing in the centre circle at Burnden, dressed as a Gladiator shouting "Are you not entertained...?"

Coventry City in the league cup, not sure what year it was either 89 or 90. Can't even remember the score. Only thing I can remember was my dad telling me that Steve Ogrizovic once scored a goal, so I kept expecting him to kick it over Dave Felgate from his own area.........................he never did though.

I feel really old now, 1964 Nottingham Forrest at
burnden lost 4-2 Hopky in the nets, i think Sid Farrimond & Warwick Rimmer....

When my Grandpa was still around, he assured me it was the Ipswich/Worthington game back in '79(?) and I completely missed the goal due to mucking around and not being the slightest bit interested. I could have sworn it was Bristol City, probably the same season, but who am I to argue? His is a much better story.
