Liverpool produced a wretched display on Saturday afternoon as they fell to their first defeat of the season at home to Southampton.

The Reds never looked comfortable in the match, and Brendan Rodgers made the peculiar choice of playing four natural centre backs across the back four, with Kolo Toure at right back and Mamadou Sakho at left back, choosing to leave the likes of Jose Enrique, Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom on the bench, and the defence looked shaky throughout.

Daniel Sturridge should have been awarded a penalty in the first half when he was brought down in the box, but referee Neil Swarbrick was not interested. Steven Gerrard almost opened the scoring from a free kick but was brilliantly denied by a flying save from Artur Boruc.

The goal arrived in the 53rd minute, following a corner that should never have been conceded. Rickie Lambert took a throw in and Kolo Toure failed to control the ball as it cannoned off his legs and out behind the goal. To add insult to injury, Adam Lallana swung the ball in and Dejan Lovren headed it into the net, despite Gerrard's attempt on the line to keep it out.

From here, Liverpool never really looked like getting back into the game. Rodgers attempted to bring more balance back to the defence by bringing on Enrique for Daniel Agger and, later, went more attacking by sacrificing Martin Skrtel to bring on Luis Alberto, but it was all too little too late as Southampton hung on for a huge three points.

Liverpool remain top of the table but have been brought down to earth with this result. But on a more positive note, Luis Suarez is now eligible to play once again, having completed his 10-match ban.
