Radio Leicester

Stringer is perhaps too much influenced by Test Match commentary, which due to the boring nature of the game needs a lot of embroidery and colour/texture from other things that are going on. (Was it Johnners who always used to say "as another bus goes up the something-or-other road?" ) I don't actually mind Stringer coming out with interesting asides so long as it isn't to the detriment of anything that's going on in the game.

Hairy i think you are wrong. Radio leicesters policy is to paint a picture of the match for those of us that can't go.
For once the radio guys where in with the fans. Blackpool is day out dress up day and a bit of a beano and radio grandad reflect that.

I have sat next to stringy when he does the commentry and i was surprised how much is not said but he never misses a goal or an attack at each end and fills time when the ball is out of play. If you know football about half the game the balls either dead or nothing happening.
So whats he going to do tell you about every pass whos moving sideways. My son went on an Audio commentry course for the the assistance of blind fans and its completly different you have to say where the ball is all the time and not so much about who has got it etc its very hard work and as dull as dishwater for the sighted but priceless for the visually impaired.

Still don't understand what picture he is painting discussing Alan Young's after shave or the fact he hadn't had a sandwich.
How long it took to get there Friday night etc etc.

I was pleased with the noise from the city supporters and stringy does pick up on that well, all I ask is a bit more precise commentary.

why dos's Stringer always say. Alan Young former Leicester city striker. I should think everyone knows by now. He must tell us every 5 mins. I for one am feed up with it.

I'm very happy with it myself. I think there are a couple of subtleties to radio commentry in particular that Stringer deals with quite well:

- There are long periods of play where nothing is happening. "Right back throws the ball in, heads go up, out of play for another throw-in three yards further forward". "Four players take turns to tackle or give the ball away to each other, resulting in a foul". "Fifteen seconds of head tennis with everyone in defensive positions". During these times, the play is probably more intriguing for not knowing what's going on. Unlike certain times I've heard in the past, it's very rare in Stringer's commentry for "Goal" to suddenly be announced - if he's talking about something inconsequential, it's because there's genuinely nothing interesting happening and a bit of light banter is more entertaining.

- He keeps on introuding Alan Young for much the same reason that he keeps reading the score: The commentry is not just for people who have been listening from the start and do so for every game, it's also for people who are just tuning in or listening part-time.

I think the whole Stringer/Young package is pretty damn good to be honest.

I think the worst commentry I've heard was from several years back now - it was back when Matt Elliott was still playing, which gives you an idea of just how far back we go - and two guys had been brought in to Radio Leicester to fill in as they commentated on the match. They didn't even try to do this. Instead, they prattled on to each other for 90 minutes, barely even noticing that the a football match was taking place. The worse part came when, all of a sudden, one of them interrupted his own monologue with the words:
"Oh. Two-nil."

Thankfully, Radio Leicester learned their lesson and they never returned. Even John "A little too excited when Leicester got relegated" Barber was better than that, and Stringer is hundreds of times better than him.

P.S. It was Leicester versus Birmingham, city fox. We always have boring games.
