Liverpool were left frustrated as they were eliminated from the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night at Manchester United.

United started the game brightly but Liverpool soon settled and started threatening. Luis Suarez could have put the Reds in front if he had made a better first touch as he ran in behind Jonny Evans, but he hit it too close to David de Gea and the chance was gone.

The only goal of the game came in the first minute of the second half. Kolo Toure conceded a sloppy corner kick for the second game running and again Liverpool were punished. Wayne Rooney whipped it in and Javier Hernandez bundled it over the line with his shin from close range.

Liverpool were soon threatening again and were guilty of taking too many touches in the United penalty area, but good chances were wasted by Jordan Henderson and Toure. Rooney forced a couple of good saves from Simon Mignolet while Shinji Kagawa clipped the top of the bar. At the other end, the returning Luis Suarez's free kick also struck the top of the bar after being deflected by Phil Jones.

United managed to hold on for victory to leave Liverpool ruing their missed chances, and the Reds once again failed to score a goal in the second half of a game, something they have not done all season.
