Interesting article from the Guardian, analysing AVB's formative years as a scout, working for George Burley at Ipswich, believe it or not, and then his later years under Jose, until their relationship, apparently, soured somewhat.

What stood out for me most was the ambition, confidence and assertiveness of AVB, to question Sir Bobby Robson's tactics, and send him analysis in the post. AVB, and Mourinho too, go against the grain, against the flawed wisdom that only people who've played the game at the highest level can manage at the highest level.
AVB & Mourinho - the fractured relationship

Chicken - not to get into one of the classic AVB argument things. But how do you think he's doing this season? I know it's early days yet...

AVB is world class Chicken, what say you?

I haven't elaborated on it because i dont want it to turn into a pro/anti AVB debate but AVB isn't even close to those guys - and unless he pulls off a CL win in his 3rd year at Spurs (which it would be by then) then he still has another 10 years before anyone can even compare.

How do i think he's doing?
From the players we have now, i'd say average.
Defensively better but we still look like we are going to struggle scoring - exactly the same as last year.
Bale bailed us out alot last season, and so far we have had 2 penalties and a 93rd minute winner to bail us out.
They all add up to points on the board but still not convinced.
Tomorrow will be a decent test though.

Nah, it's good to get a critical view on him sometimes. You make reasonable points. Tomorrow is the first proper proper test. Hopefully we smash it
Have a good one

Fergie was a solid if unspectacular CF I was led to believe. Player for Rangers but didn't entirely make it there and had to cut his cloth accordingly.
Wenger was a 3rd or 4th division fullback I believe.
I read recently AVB played but only at amateur level. Not sure about Mourinho.
Playing is partly about the brain, but mainly reliant on the physical and technical ability.
You don't need the latter two to be a manager, but you need the former to be spot on. To make the instructions rather than just follow.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a higher proportion of defenders make it as managers. You see the whole game from the back. I always prefer Park Lane to shelf for analysing games.
As a defender myself, and not the most talented of players, I think we played less on instinct as a forward or a thick-of-it CM does but have to have a keener sense of danger gained from analysing what goes on in front of you
