SUGAR RAY ROBINSON

hi guys

Bit of a newbie on here due to my general lack of knowledge compared to you guys ,
watched a 30 min piece on SRR on sky yesterday and it left you in no doubt that he was the greatest of all time , i always thought sugar ray leonard , roy jones, floyd mayweather and of course ali at his peak ( only watched old films of ali ) were the greatest i personally have ever seen ,

however having now watched a few clips on SRR and hearing what the experts say about him i am starting to think i did indeed miss the greatest boxer that has or ever will live -
any thoughts guys -- were any of you lucky enough to have seen the great mans career ?

do you know much about SRR bud -- must admit after watching the sky piece on him it has put a bee in my bonnet to find out more about him -
i always thought roy jones was the best i ever saw but it is more than likely that SRR was a couple of levels above him --

Watched a few of his famous fights, against Turpin, the rematch and a few of his fights against La Motta.

thanks so much for the link D4 i found it fascinating , from what i gather there is so little that has actually been recorded of his fights which is a tragedy in itself -

i must admit i never realised he fought la motta 6 times and won 5 of those which is probably an indication to how great he really was -

Jake, once said, he fought Sugar Ray Robinson so many time he should have diabetes

yeh -- one the boxing historians in the 30 min piece on SRR i watched said the same thing -- think it was bert sugar ?

i often watch him talk if he on ringside ( sky programme ) what he does not know about the history of boxing is not worth knowing , absolutely amazing recall of boxers and boxing history going back to the stone age --

Bert sadly died last year, he had a great knowledge of boxing history,(he lived through most of it ) and always had an anecdote for every boxing story.

SRR won his first golden gloves at 126lbs, that was Naseem Hamed's weight class, and then went on to fight Maxim at light heavy 175lbs, and would have won the bout, if not for heat exhaustion, that is what weight Roy Jones fought at for the latter part of his career.

never knew bert sugar died , such a shame as he was always a fascinating person to listen to and would imagine with his vast knowledge there was very little else in his life but boxing -- would"nt imagine the non stop cigar smoking did his lungs alot of good either if the truth is known -

talking of roy jones -- he was my great boxing hero thruout the 90s and i personally think he was better than sugar ray leonard for sheer ability and probably would have been thought of as such had he not carried on past his sell by date , certainly i believe he would of been ranked up there with the best of all time -

sadly he carried on way to long which i believe has badly tarnished any all time great status that he might of had with his losses to tarver , johnson , green , and lord knows who else -

fascinating to see the early footage of SRR , i would imagine it was posted on you tube by a private collector as it was shot in the ancient silent super 8 cine film format -
i would imagine whoever it was must have been at ringside holding a little battery powered super 8 cine camera -
----- amazing stuff
