From the BBC site:
When asked about Sir Alex Ferguson's quotes about Frank Lampard not being an "elite player", the Chelsea and England midfielder said: "He's always spoken very well of me and it would be a book I'd like to read.
"I've got off quite lightly from some of the headlines I've read. I've got a lot of respect for him. I don't mind him being not completely glowing about myself."
On Fergie's criticism of Beckham, he said: "From knowing Beckham, I think he's a fantastic professional - Beckham and Ferguson are very different people - David Beckham's path was completely different to how Ferguson would have imagined his ideal footballer's path…"
Clearly Frank is more than an elite footballer, he's an elite human being with that response.

David Platt had a fabulous scoring record for England. Better than Lampard and Gerrard. Is he better than them ? No.
Lampard has also been playing in a better team than Gerrard for the last 10 years hence more goals.Stats about passing and assists are helpful, but only a guide. You can make great passes and the striker can miss and some players with passes try things which don't always come off. Others play safe and may have a better passing percentage.I am not saying this about Lampard, but it is more a comment about stats.
Given the choice, I would just choose Gerrard, but it is not ridiculous to choose Lampard over him. Some people act as though it is nonsensical to prefer the other one to their choice.

or you could argue Gerrard has stood out cos for most parts he's been a Big Fish in a Feckin small pond!!

Maybe, but if Lampard played for Liverpool and Gerrard for Chelsea, would this be a topic played out as often.

Some of the comments on here are ridiculous
Someone above said he was only good because he played with drogba and if he didn't he wouldn't have shone
That's the most pathetic reasoning I have heard one a five year old would make
You base an argument as fact which really is your own assumption. He played with drogba and that's that. Scholars played with various world class players in his time and whilst I rate scholes very highly he just can't and never will be seen as better than frank.
And that my friend is based on fact and statistical evidence.

Based on fact
Scholes might not have the same "stats" as Frank, but when have "stats" ever told the whole story. Take Lampard "stats" before the signing of the players who allowed him to do what he does best were signed. You have a very good player, but his "stats" suffer.
As a Chelsea fan if you can't appreciate what the system and players such as Drogba, Makelele and Essien helped Lampard do in that Chelsea team then your're myopic. Take these players away and for West Ham, for Chelsea and for England, Frank's "stats" aren't so impressive.
He's a great player, but he falls below the level of the other two.

I don't see why this has turned into Lampard vs Gerrard vs Scholes? They all are/were "elite".

Over the last 10 years Lampard has been miles more consistent than Gerrard. Fact!!!

Discussing whether Lampard or Gerrard is better is a stupid, unending argument that is open merely to subjective opinion. The only person who is definitely wrong is Ferguson, who claims not to rate either of them in order to wind up his opposition. They are (or at least were) both great players - Liverpool and Chelsea have been lucky to have them.

Any player who can keep his place in a strong squad like what Chelsea and Utd have had,has got to be top top player. I believe Gerrard would of more than held his own if he had gone to the likes of Chelsea. All three players are brilliant, but Scholes is my favourite.

What has seemed to have been neglected is that above players has since left Chelsea yet Lampard still scores goals, provides assists and generally maintains a high level of performance. I'm a big fan of all three but I wouldn't have swapped Lampard for anyone else for Chelsea. Great professional.
