Welcome to the official match thread (from a Town perspective anyway) of the big clash of the blue and white that is:

This is only the 25th meeting of our two teams, the last being 17 February 2013 when they stuffed us 4-1 in the FA Cup on their way to winning the trophy. That was our first game against them for a decade when we were both in League 2 before their meteoric rise to the promised land of the Premier League.
The DW Stadium is a nice modern ground, not dissimilar to our own and should be a place where proper football can be played. There is no real issue between the fans so should be a good trip out for all. A popular topic for all fans is the cost of football and Dave Whelan has been vocal recently about the issue of pricing and getting fans into the stadium. This is easier for a club with a massive parachute payment like Wigan but the sentiment is correct.
Wigan arent having the best of seasons considering the money and players they have at their disposal with a lot of games in the league and in Europe to deal with. Hopefully this should help Town as they had a tough test last night against QPR, holding them to a very respectable draw (just as we did!).
Head to Head
Town have won 11 of the 24 games, the last being in the 1993, and they have won 7. This obviously means little but current form has Town ahead at the moment but a well earned point last night will have given them a boost.
Team News
Wigan Athletic
Wigan have recently brought in Marc Albrighton in from Villa and he played last night so should be there on Saturday. They also have the impressive young player from Man Utd Nick Powell on loan, although he hasn't fulfilled his potential just yet. Town wont forget McManaman from making Hunt look decidedly average last season (thankfully Palace didn't watch that game!) and he will be a constant threat no doubt, boosted by an extended contract. The young keeper Lee Nicholls seems highly rated but being young hasn't been fully tested yet and we know how a your promising keeper can be inconsistent under pressure! They have quality throughout the team and will be a threat to us.
Town:
The big question for Town will be who plays up front. Stead lead the line on Saturday with Holmes just behind him and apart from his goal he didnt have the best of games. That may open the door for someone else like Carr but I suspect Stead will be given a chance to build his confidence after his goal. I suspect that after the training ground bust up both Paterson and Clayton will still be out of the equation and we will just have to see about Gerrard.
For me Hammill is the first name on the team sheet at the moment and I think Ward probably deserves a slot there too after a decent performance on Saturday. I want to see Gobern given a chance ahead of someone like Southern who isnt match fit, but may have to go with him if Clayton is still out of the picture. I wouldnt be against trying Holmes again from the start as Wigan will be less rough in the tackle than Leeds and so it may suit him more. Saying that its hard not to find a place for Scannell as he was fantastic when he came on and his strength and skill changed the game for us.

Social Side
Anyone who has been out in Wigan on boxing day knows it can be an interesting place for a few beers! As I tend to be visiting inlaws whenever Im in Wigan I dont know too much about drinking around the ground so I have got this info from the football grounds guide website:
"Simon Wright a visiting West Bromwich Albion fan informs me; 'Beside the away turnstiles is an entrance to a bar, specifically for the use of away fans. It has the usual bar, big screen television and sells pies, as well as teas and coffees. It's a great facility and welcomes families' It is know as the Marquee Bar as it resembles one inside. The traditional pub for away fans visiting the DW stadium is the Red Robin, which is only a few minutes walk away from the ground opposite the Cinema Complex.
Otherwise in the centre of town is a Wetherspoons outlet called the 'Moon Under Water' which was popular with away supporters on my last visit. Also worth a visit is the award winning 'Anvil' pub, which is located next to the bus station. Both these pubs are listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Also worth a mention is the Berkeley on Wallgate (near the railway station). This fair sized pub, had a good mix of home and away supporters on my last visit, serves five ever changing real ales and shows Sky Sports on a huge screen. Otherwise alcohol is available inside the stadium. Andrew MacGregor adds; 'The Swan and Railway pub opposite North Western railway station was very welcoming. They encouraged us to put our Reading flag up in the window and were very pleasant to us all'."
Visiting supporters are requested to use Car Park 1 at the stadium, the first car park on the right on Stadium Way. To reach the Stadium from Car Park 1, continue on foot along Stadium Way towards the Stadium. Visiting supporters are seated in the North Stand. From the official website the options in the ground are as follows:
Carling - £3.20/pint
Worthington's - £3.20/pint
Coke/Diet Coke/Fanta - £1.60
Coke Zero (bottle) - £1.70

My Prediction
Im optimistic for the weekend in that I think we can play good football and score even without the goal machine Vaughan. Therefore and just to wind my Latics fan wife up Im going for a 3-1 win for Town!
